Book Reviews of Better Than Steroids

Book Review: Straightforward Review of BTS
Summary: 5 Stars

The author's point seems to be that following the nutritional advice he gives without taking steroids is better than taking steroids while hardly paying attention to what you eat at all. My opinion on that is that he's possibly right.

Basically, what I think the reader should take from this book is that you can use calories FOR you--you have to eat all 3 macronutrients anyway to build muscle, so you might as well make the most of them. He discusses nutrient timing and what Arnold Schwarzenegger calls "creating demand". After you do a really hard workout, your muscles are in demand of protein, and they're also in need of carbohydrates to replace the carb stores in the muscles (glycogen).

It makes sense that if you eat quality protein shortly after a hard workout, and also an adequate amount of carbohydrates, a great deal of these calories are going to go to muscle anabolism and recovery, and NOT SO MUCH TO BE STORED AS BODY FAT. He doesn't advocate eating an excess of calories, though, as there are only so many your body can use for "productive" purposes.

Like any book, he makes a lot of points that I highly disagree with, but for me, ovrerall, this book was worth reading because of the helpful points he makes, and also because of the topics he discusses that further support and explain what modern experts and reliable/credible readings say about building muscle.

Lastly, I want to mention that specifically, what he says about insulin was very beneficial to me - it can be your best friend (assisting muscle-building) or your worst enemy (assisting the body's natural tendency to want to store calories as fat).

I highly recommend reading this book and determining what parts of it might be helpful to you.

Book Review: It did not help me.
Summary: 1 Stars

It is almost one year I work out in a gym. I bought this book hoping to have good advice.
There is a lot of chatter in the book and little useful information. The price is far too high for what it offers. It seems to me that the high price is intended for marketing: "big price = great book". It definitely is not worth the money; it is superficial, with very few explanations. The character of the letters are large and there is not much net writing. I attentively read all the book, but it did not help me. All the calculations about diet are not practical and very difficult to carry out as the author himself says, you have to search on the web to find out about every foods you eat. He only raves about how beautiful his methods are and his own body is (every chapter starts with a low quality black and white picture of his). The bottom line of the book is: you have to go to his gym-clinic. Furthermore it was not a pleasant reading, not a good writing. If you are interested in nutrition, the best and most beautiful book, in my opinion is, Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy: The Harvard Medical School Guide to Healthy Eating by M.D. Walter C. Willett. It completely changed the way I eat.Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy: The Harvard Medical School Guide to Healthy Eating

Book Review: Covers the most important part of building a great body - Nutrition.
Summary: 4 Stars

I love this book because it covers the key to a great body, nutrition.
It concentrates more on nutrition than it does on weight training and cardio. I love that.

The only reason I gave this book a 4/5 is because the actual plans were a bit confusing.
Dr.Warren Willey gives you an exact blueprint to attacking your goal, whatever it may be.

Want to lose fat and maintain muscle? He's got a plan for that.
Want to build muscle and maintain fat? He's got a plan for that
Want to build muscle and even lose a bit of fat in the process? It's in there too.

It just takes a bit of work to construct your plan and figure out exactly what you
need to do, day to day. I think it could have been layed out and worded better.
But that doesn't take away from the great information that is in this book. It's wonderful
and I recommend anyone who wants to learn how to eat picks up a copy.

Remember... Eating is the most important piece to the fitness puzzle. Learn how to eat to achieve
the results you want.

Book Review: Better than Steroids
Summary: 5 Stars

Better than Steroids is a great book for anyone interested in bodybuilding. I have been training for 3 years now and I thought I knew what I was doing until I read this book. He keeps everything as simple as possible while giving you exact formulas for building muscle. I have only been training according to his book for a month now and have already lost 8 lbs of fat and gained 8 lbs of muscle and this is only the beginning. I am still learning and there are several more techniques in the book I haven't even tried.

At first, I was optimistic of some of Dr. Willey's ideas and decided to get a second opinion from a former semi-professional body builder with a degree in nutrition. He verified everything in the book that we discussed. Dr. Willey keeps the reading to the point and really does teach you how to use food as a drug. I have read several books on nutrition but they are so full of technical details that it becomes hard to understand. Dr. Willey keeps the reading to the point and I highly recommend this book.

Book Review: Whether you are a successful bodybuilder or amateur this book will benefit 5 Stars

"Better Than Steroids" really unlocks the secrets to using FOOD as a drug. I would recommend it to anyone that wants to change their body, no matter what their goals may be. I have been using Dr. Willey's concepts with my personal training clients as well as myself for a few years. I have helped guide over 100+ people using the ideas and concepts in "Better Than Steroids" and have had nothing but success.
I am an accomplished amateur bodybuilder for 5 years now and Dr. Willey has guided my training and has taken eating to a whole new level. Drug free bodybuilding demands proper eating, whether you are bulking up or leaning down, and Dr. Willey has unmasked these secretes for the first time in any book.
Overall this is an easy read and touches on many subjects from water intake, different lifting programs as well as a vast variety of eating secrets that with a little dedication can change the body, mind and overall life of ANYONE.

I give it an A+.
