Book Reviews of Better Than SteroidsBook Review: Great book! Summary: 5 Stars
This book is GREAT! Anyone wondering about what food does and how it works should defintiely get this book! Dr. Warren Willey has great insight on foods and how they work with your body. Just enough of the scientific stuff to explain what's going on and give you the knowledge you need to be informed without putting you to sleep.
There are some good diets and great points of view. The doctor really understands food and how it works with your body. If you want to understand food and what it does to you and for you this book is a must. Why do people call some foods bad, like carbs, and what makes them different from protiens? What are good fats and bad fats? When is the right time to eat and what should you eat throughout the day? When is the best time for certain foods and how can you maximize your workouts just by the foods you eat? It's all here... Such a great book!
Book Review: Fantastic guidelines to improving strength through nutrition. Summary: 5 Stars
"Better Than Steroids" was recommended to me while I was checking out "Nutrition Timing." I bought it on impulse considering the reviews it had gotten and the subject matter it contains.
While I have been an athlete ever since my freshman year on the high school rowing team, never have I had such specific and all-encompassing instruction in how to eat to gain muscle and lose body fat as I have in this book. Before, I was just told to eat more to gain wait and eat less to lose weight, but I had no idea that timing of the food and what proportion to each other would play in the relationship of how much muscle I would put on.
Finally, I have a nutrition reference that I feel confident referring to and I recommend it to anyone interested in learning how to structure your eating, whether you are body building or strength training or trying to lose some body fat.
Book Review: Food is a drug that is Better Than Steroids, this book teaches you how Summary: 5 Stars
While this book has some good information regarding general body building ideas it is the best book ever written on how food is a drug and if used correctly can be extremely effective in building muscle. This is no fad diet, it is the real deal. Jay Cutler (Mr. Olympia) wrote his testimonial on the back recommending this book and stating that Dr. Willey's diet principles follow exactly what he does on a day to day basis. So if you don't like my opinion it is hard to argue with Mr. Olympia. Great book for anyone trying to put on lean mass while losing fat mass whether you are a seasoned pro or a beginner. I also highly recommend his other book "What does your doctor look like naked." While the books target audience is more the general public it still has some extremely powerful information on how food is a drug and how it can benefit us if we understand how it works.
Book Review: Everything expected of this book Summary: 4 Stars
This is a very good book. It does not just tell when and what to eat, but also takes in consideration that each individual has different nutritional needs. Dr. Warren uses a very simple language, understandable by anyone. Yet, all the info in this book is backed by science. The book is written very objectively. All the diets, in addition to explain the function and benefits of each individual one, it also explains the drawbacks of each one. It covers the steroids topic very clearly for those curious about it.
On the negative side, this book lacks a complete food database to go with each specific diet. Some examples are provided, but not enough. Also the part that corresponds to workouts doesn't have any pictures, which makes it hard to achieve proper form. However, a whole set exercises maybe outside the scope of the book.
Book Review: Someone who looks and acts the part Summary: 5 Stars
All too often when you go to a doctor they are the last ones you want to listen to when it comes to nutritional advice. Why? Because they rarely ever look that healthy themselves! Those ideas take a back seat with this doctor. Dr. Willey teaches us how to manipulate our bodies hormonal response using proper nutrition so that it's BETTER THAN STEROIDS! Just like another book I highly recommend (Men's Health TNT Diet: The Explosive New Plan to Blast Fat, Build Muscle, and Get Healthy in 12 Weeks) he cites just enough research to satisfy my academic side and doesn't go into too much detail to drag out what can be simply stated. This book is a must have for anyone looking to improve their physique.
