Book Review: Plastic characters, fragmented plot

This was my first book by this author. It will be my last. I have to wonder what planet the author grew up on because on the planet where I live, people just don't act this way. A supposedly sophisticated intelligent crook invites a lawman to his town to help investigate something and within a day, for no reason at all, tries to scare him out of town? The crooks kill a person in the beginning who has absolutely no power to hurt them and inexplicably allow Lena to go free when she has the capacity (being a cop and all) to do them real harm?
As for the crooks, the real power, it seems, behind Valentine's little crime ring is his wife Myra who has virtually no dialog at all in the story. Valentine is so unbelievable and does such preposterous things throughout, apparently for the sole reason of setting up the "surprise" toward the end when he is revealed as the ringleader of it all.
Jeffrey and Sara are called out of town all of sudden and end up staying in a hotel that a realistic doctor and police chief would never think of entering. And by the way, after they've been there for three days, Slaughter finally says something about suitcases that (magically) appeared because they sure didn't pack them before they left. The references to Hank's recovery and AA affiliation show a complete misunderstanding of how recovery and AA works. Hank is the sponsor for a newly sober female?? Not in any AA group I've attended!!
I could go on and on but that would require me picking the book back up and refreshing my memory. I think I would be better off just letting myself forget. It shouldn't take long.
