Book Reviews of Biology with MasteringBiology? (8th Edition)

Book Review: Good for the future biologist but terrible for anyone else, especially the student!
Summary: 1 Stars

For those of you who don't know the book comes with an online key to log you into masteringbiology.com. The class I was in required almost daily quizzes from this website that supposedly was covered by material from the book. This is rarely the case. The quizzes focus on "real world" application of the material covered in the book such as alien invasion and other hypothetical nonsense like that which do not help you to learn the material. The quizzes from the website are purposely designed to be vague, ambiguous, and difficult in order to "test" your knowledge of the material but for those of you like me, who aren't programmed for sciences, all they accomplish is frustration as they tweak a word here and there to imply it isn't correct and then fail you. Often the questions in the homework and quizzes provide no context and have multiple answers that could be true depending on the context which the question leaves out resulting in many missed questions. My teacher frequently had to give credit to the class because of very poorly worded questions from the online quizzes and homework assignments.
You'd think the book would be prepared to help you to learn biology but it just doesn't. The book takes the projectile vomit approach to the subject, by which I mean it spews at you a mass of information that lacks direction, an intelligent ordering of subject material, comprehend-able examples to further illustrate subject material, and all the while demeaning any who would have the audacity and stupidity to believe other than what the book claims (I'm not here to debate the existence of God or Gods but the book is very against such beliefs to the pint of calling you dumb). Also the books scorns some common and new (last few decades) scientific theories that go against what is outlined in the book giving the impression that the Mastering Biology book and website is the know all and end all of all biological truths. The book and website, by the end of the semester, had caused so much trouble for the class that the Biology program at my college dropped the book entirely and are using a new one for future classes.
My advice is to not buy the book because it fails at presenting the material in a clear and learnable manner, fails at making the material reasonably enjoyable to learn or to even study, is biased in the approach it takes to biology by discounting the beliefs of the religious, is biased in the discounting of scientific theories that do not coincide with what the book presents as absolute truths, fails in the online department by having very poorly worded questions to the online homework assignments and quizzes that coincide with the book, and fails at showing the relevance of why the material is important and usable to anyone but a biologist. This last part was tough for me because unless I can make a personal connection to the material I am not motivated to spend time the time I should studying it because I don't see the value of why it is applicable and important to study other than for a grade. If I can't make the connection then I almost immediately forget the material right after taking the test, which is exactly what happened to me. So if you are looking for a book to help you learn about biology in a way that will help you retain the information then look elsewhere, cause you won't find it with this worthless book.
