Book Reviews of Bistro CookingBook Review: Basic bistro eats Summary: 2 Stars
Very basic advice: a roast beef and tomato sandwich with creme fraiche for example. Simple recipes with thrifty cuts of meats for stews, soups (just add liquid!) along with many potato recipes (with more creme fraiche) from well-known and obscure bistros throughout France. Note: quiche is called 'tarte' here with no cross reference. Salads with anything you'd put into a sandwich, oil and vinegar dressing. Good new-cook gift or a quick read for the armchair traveler but I expected more from this famous food writer.
Book Review: Delicious meals from simple recipes Summary: 5 Stars
What I love about this book is the recipes are simple but the results are delicious. The ingredients aren't unusual so you don't need to go on an expedition to find them; your local grocery will have almost anything you need. (If you can't find creme fraiche for Mme Cartet's Potato Gratin you can use heavy cream. Or use half of each, stirred together, as I do!) If you need to cook in someone else's kitchen or on vacation this is the book to take with you.
Book Review: Disappointed Summary: 2 Stars
Having enjoyed Ms Wells "Trattoria" for years, I decided to order "Bistro Cooking" based on its many favorable reviews. It's not the book that "Trattoria" is. The recipes are more difficult and the ingredients often call for special shopping. These differences may just be the difference between French and Italian cooking, but differences they are.
Book Review: Excellent recipes for good & quick cooking! Summary: 5 Stars
I have prepared several dishes from this book and am more than pleased with the results. Not only does Miss Wells provide for tastefull recipes, I am sure they can be prepared by almost anyone who can read and wants to serve a good meal. I do like the potato & soup recipes. The introduction is also worth reading.
Book Review: Magnifique! Summary: 5 Stars
What a great cookbook: clear instructions and fanstastic results. I have not been disappointed with a single recipe. At least 10 recipes from this book have become mainstays for me--more than any other cookbook I own. I rave about this book all the time. Several friends also own this cookbook and have a similar opinion.
