Book Review: Not an entertaining read...
Summary: 2 Stars
This book was NOT one of Cusslers best, the plot was cheesy (but who reads Cussler for plot only?), Koreans who want to reunite North and South Korea by attacking America in order to divert their attention? Sorry mate, it just didn't sound convincing. (When I type Dirk, i am talking about Dirk Jr, unless stated otherwise)
The villain in this novel was not particularly scary, instead he was actually quite stupid, he could of shot them several dozen time and got away with it. But instead he kidnaps Dirk and Summer and invites them for dinner,and reveals his plans and how he plans to restore Korea and Blah,Blah,Blah, this scene reads like it was set up only so Dirk could make wisecracks through. Then instead of doing the logical thing and shooting them, he chains them up and tries to drown them in some spooky cave while he is off doing dastardly deeds, Summer and Dirk escape. Towards the end the villain does it again, instead if shooting Dirk and Jack (The cheesy new Al) he ties them up and bails, leaving Dirk alone to escape (they are actually saved by Dirk Sr).
Dirk Jr. is just a copy and paste of the old Dirk Sr. we all know and love except, this younger version makes continuous bad wisecracks every couple of lines. Why didn't Cussler give him something different from his old man? He has the same "wavy" hair, the same "craggy" face and even the same "Opaline" green eyes. He likes the EXACT same things as his dad, and he even has the same job that his dad had. Some sort of real difference would have been good. Dirk Jr's sister Summer is just a piece of cardboard that stands around and does nothing to really help the plot. Summer and Dirk will have some of the worse dialog between other, its just so cheesy.
But help is on the way as Dirk Sr. and Al show up and show the younger clone-son how its done.
At least Clive could put something
This book falls short in many ways and I do not think that the older fans will like this new, younger less exciting son of Pitt. The book itself is too long and it just isn't exciting enough to male you want to go out and buy it (I borrowed it)or read it again.
Cusslers cameo in this book was a shocker, I really cant be bothered going on about it.
This new Dirk just doesn't cut it, nor does the story. I gave it 2 stars because Dirk Sr. and Al show up to save the day, the rest was ruined by Dirk Jr.
Clive, you need to really think if you want the series to take this direction. Lets hope something like this doesn't happen with the awesome Kurt Austin Novels
