Book Review: Med Students Golden Egg

Recently finished my neurology clerkship using this book and aced the exam. I am no wizard by any means, and I owe a lot to this book. At the start of my rotation, the clerkship director swore point blank that we needed to use the book Clinical Neurology, or we would fail the shelf exam. Unfortunately, our school was notorious for having students fail the neuro shelf more than any other exam. I took a descent look at Clinical Neurology and nervously decided against the clerkships director's advice choosing this book instead. It wasn't that Clinical Neurology was a poor book, but it was much too dense for what I wanted. It also had few clinical relevance and no questions, which really help you to hone in on your diagnosis and management skills. This book seemed much friendlier and allowed me enough time to read case files and pretest before I had to take the shelf. For a 3rd year medical student you will be able to easily understand each chapter with no additional references. Each chapter is well written and concise. I admire this book for its brevity: diagrams, tables, and pictures are much better than clinical neurology, who packs their differential diagnosis with so many things that it is depressing and unrealistic. I must agree, however, that this book may be a little too brief on describing treatments of various conditions, but let's face it. Most of the treatments in neurology are straight forward with a couple of drugs or you consult neurosurgery, and this book covered enough to help you understand how to use relevant drugs and when to consult surgery. If you decide to go with Clinical Neurology, don't be surprised if it leaves you hanging on treatment options as well. It isn't the book, it's the profession. Lastly, questions at the end of the book are very similar to what I found on my shelf. A couple questions were off the wall, but overall they were good practice. In summary, great book for clerkship and the shelf but too lengthy for STEP 2 review.
