Book Reviews of Bob Books, Set 1: Beginning ReadersBook Review: Great consistency for early readers Summary: 5 Stars
We borrowed the former packaging of these from the library a few times and decided they were excellent. My son, a kindergartener who knows many site words, is over 1/2 way through this set with very little problem. These are some of the first books he's "read". These books help him work through any problems he encounters because they are so consistent with the sounds presented in each book. They also stick to simple words, which is an area where many other early reading books fail. They always seem to stick a more difficult word in the story because they can't figure out one that'll fit. We never have that problem with the Bob books. We also like these because they have many of his sight words he's learning at school. We reinforce those words while introducing more easy words. Once he masters this set, we will move on to the 2nd set, which we've already purchased. And he really loves these because he can read to mom & dad and then we read more complex stories to him.
I also showed these to my neighbor and she immediately purchased a set for her grand-neice, who is also in kindergarten.
Book Review: Lovely and Delightful first reading series! Summary: 5 Stars
We became acquainted with the Bob series a few months ago when my (then) three year old daughter started bringing books home from her Montessori classroom. She immediately fell in love them and also fell in love with reading.
The author did a great job with the series by offering just the right amount of words on a page as well as with the length of the book; each book is about a dozen pages. The early books start out with 4 words per page with more words added per page as you progress through to Book 12. After the title page of each book is a list of new sounds or punctuation marks that are introduced in that story. The simple illustrations are cute and so full of expression that they naturally lead to discussions about what the characters might be thinking/feeling in the story.
Her favorite book in this series is "Dot and the Dog", but what she loves most is that she can pick any book out of the box and read it cover to cover all by herself. She's about halfway through Series 2 and always looks forward to getting her hands on the next book.
Book Review: Confidence Builder Summary: 5 Stars
What I love about these books is that they are short, so my 4 year old can read them completely and feel successful by finishing a book.
From the other reviews I see there are polarizing feelings about these books; too simple, too boring, wonderful, etc. Obviously you have to figure out what works for YOUR kids, there's more than one right way to learn how to read (just like there's more than one right way to parent). And, these books may not be good for your kid right now, but might be in three weeks.
We are on the first box, and I am not pushing the books but offering them. Usually my son will want to read two if I read two to him. He keeps wanting to read the first ones (which he's memorized...so he's no longer 'reading' them), so I ask him to read two that are new to him, then he can read one of his favorites.
Reading is a milestone for us -- really, it is for everyone, and I commend the authors for coming up a with a simple, straightforward concept that has helped my son build his confidence.
Book Review: Awesome Summary: 5 Stars
I just got this set in the mail today. I had already been working with my 5 yr old on my own with sounding out words and focusing on 3 letter words. His teacher has been saying he is behind, well. . . he has breezed through the 1st and 2nd book in the car and asked to do the 3rd one tonight. He is working his way through that one but got interrupted because he had to go somewhere. I am on amazon to purchase the next set of books because I anticipate he will be through this set in a couple weeks or less. I am not mad that they are quite easy for him. What I love is that when he makes it through a page he looks up at me so excited and says "I can read!" Priceless. My son needed confidence and these books are at the perfect level. This is the most rewarding part of parenting, watching your child realize his potential; the potential you knew he had. This set is perfect. I would recommend to anyone and I am saving them with the goal of teaching the twins before they get to kindergarten. I guess the books have boosted my confidence as well ;-)
Book Review: simply don't hold a child's interest Summary: 2 Stars
We have the first two sets of these for our two older children. The kids are homeschooled and we have several reading primers. These are by far the least interesting. The story lines, if they could be called that, are dull and use so few words that they don't make sense. The kids, even when they were three years old, wanted no part of these books. I put them away since I wanted them to enjoy reading and not see it as a boring chore. Primer type beginning reader books are great for kids who are learning to read but these are too slow for kids who want to read a story. These books are little paper booklets so part of the problem may have been that the kids didn't see these as real books. We've had the most success with phonics worksheets for very basic skills such as reading 'mat' or 'cat', flashcards for sight words such as 'and' or 'is', simple and repetitive story books (there are hundreds out there, just look for words that repeat throughout the book), and story type primers such as 'dick and jane' and the mcguffey readers.
