Book Reviews of Bob Books, Set 1: Beginning ReadersBook Review: Not impressed. Summary: 2 Stars
I'm currently working through these books with my children, one of whome is in Kindergarten. They made me long for the days of the "Tip and Mitten" and "Dick and Jane" readers.
The drawings are of poor quality. I could draw better myself. And, more frusterating to me, there is no attempt at any kind of story. What there is consists of random sentence fragments concentrated around certain phonetics. The sentence fragments get longer as one progresses through the book.
What does work in these books is the progression of usage of words from very simple to slightly more complex by the end of the book, and the series concept allows the child to slowly build competence in reading as s/he works through the books.
So, they're not all bad and I am working with them, but do yourself a favor and unless your local school system has you roped into using them at home in conjunction with the child's schooling, look around and see what your other options are.
Book Review: So far, so good! :) Summary: 5 Stars
I was worried, when my kindergartener wasn't "getting" the concept of letter sounds creating words. He could recognize his letters, and even knew the sounds they made, thanks to all things leapfrog, but putting it all together was a problem. There was nothing but frustration coming from him, and that made him "shut down". He wanted nothing to do with reading, at all. I was at a loss, because all of the things which worked with our oldest son, just didn't click with him.
Then came our Bob Books. I must say this--I didn't have high expectations. They seemed silly. BUT--They've worked for us! We do 1 or 2, sometimes 4 mini books a night, and it has all come together!
WE HAVE JUST BOUGHT OUR 3RD SET OF BOB BOOKS!!! THESE REALLY WORKED FOR US!!!
Confidence in my little boy was built, and he is now at or above grade level, in reading. God Bless the authors--they've helped a parent who didn't know how to help her child.
Book Review: Perfect for my Energetic child! Summary: 4 Stars
I love this series. We purchased this about 1 month ago and we are already on book 6. My son is very energetic and does not have a lot of patience. He did great on the first 2 books and then started to get bored and frustrated when he could not figure out the new words. I changed my teaching technique to where he would "teach" me how to sound out the word so I could learn new words. Since then, he has loved helping teach me to read.
We are on book 6 and getting close to starting 7. I am so impressed with how much he loves them. He reads them to his younger brother and is just so proud of himself. Bob books does a great job of keeping the books easy to read with cute stories and pictures. I am only giving them 4 stars because the books are very flimsy. None of them have fallen apart, but I have a feeling they won't last long with my 2 boys! It is such a small thing compared to how much my son has gained, though.
Book Review: Great start for early readers! Summary: 5 Stars
I don't know that I can recommend these books enough! I bought them for my daughter's 3rd birthday because she was very interested in reading, was writing her name, asking how to spell words, etc... At first I was concerned that it was just too early to expect her to read & that it would do more harm than good - Nope! We read them to her first, then had her repeat as we read & before we knew it she was reading them on her own. Once she could easily read every book included in Set 1, she asked when the next set would arrive!
I'm extemely happy I stumbled across these on amazon & that I bought them for her when she was ready - not according to the age range listed. Don't be afrid to introduce these early - they are nice & simple enough to build confidence in their skill right away.
I absolutely recommend these. There is nothing more heartwarming then to watch a child light up because they did it all by themself!
Book Review: Check them out before you buy them! Summary: 3 Stars
We had the first two sets of these Bob Books (as gifts to our younger daughter). Now that my girls can read, I'm still not sure what the allure of these books is.
Sure, my younger one had been excited about reading these books... she was ecstatic that she could them all by herself! But by the time we approached the last few lessons from "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" (a much better investment, by the way), she could read most of the readers marked "Pre-Level 1", "Level 1" and some "Level 2" that I see little point in continuing with these overly simplistic Bob Book stories.
Not to say that they are without merits, but try one or two sets before you plunge ahead. Better yet, if you can split a set with a couple of families, buy them used, or check them out at the library. I personally think that it's not worth the full amount they're asking for. I would have spent my money elsewhere.
