Book Reviews of Bob Books, Set 1: Beginning Readers

Book Review: Builds confidence and encourages independence
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought these a few weeks for my daughter who turns 3 tomorrow. She is already reading the first book entirely by herself. Initially I was disappointed. I thought the books were small and flimsy, until I gave them to her. It turns out they're just the right size for her little hands and the paperback style allows me to fold the book so she only sees the page she's reading. Better yet, they're easy to take places. These books haven't left her side, in the car, to the grocery store and even to bed. She's so proud of herself when she spells out a word and then tries to sound it out. The repative nature of the books allows her to sound out a word on the first page and then recognize it on all the following pages, buiding confidence and sight recognition. Each box contains 12 books with graduating difficulty. It will take a while to master all the books in this box so at the price, its an incredible value.

Book Review: My son loves these books
Summary: 5 Stars

We were recommended the BOB Books set by the book The Well-Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home (Third Edition). We are homeschooling and are using the BOB Books along with The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading to teach my five-year-old how to read.

He really loves these books. They are not at all intimidating. They increase in complexity step by step. He also feels so happy that they are in a cute little box, and he actually takes good care of the books because of the box.

He is so excited each time he receives a new set of the books. His little sister is also excited about the BOB books.

I highly recommend these books!

Book Review: A great start

Ok, yes the artwork is poor and the stories are so simple I'm not even sure they classify as stories but they are the easiest beginning readers. There are no words in them that your child won't be able to read if they are truly ready to read (they know the consonant and short vowel sounds). They are short, simple and satisfying to a young emergent reader. These books are not meant to be literary works of art and should not replace reading time. I do not read these books to my son. He reads one a day and that's it! And then together we read many other much more exciting books. Point is, he's reading, enjoying it, and will soon be ready for the more interesting readers that have many more words in them. Start with Bob and 12 days later (there are 12 readers in each set) you'll have a very proud reader :)

Book Review: Cute little books, my 3 year old loves it!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought these books after a friend said that her kid learned to read them at age 3. My daughter was showing early signs of wanting to read, so we decided to give it a try. She loves the books! The stories are a bit on the dull side, but how much of a plot can you get when you can only use a few sounds, really? My daughter was "reading" the first book the second time we went through it. I am not sure how much is memorization, or picture association, but at least she got the confidence booster of "reading" a real book. We have gone on to a couple more of the books since then, and now I can see that she really is actually reading some of the words, sounding them out. I don't think these books are a magical instant reading program, but they do certainly help with the learning process.

Book Review: If you want your child to learn to read early, these are the books!

When my son was 3.5 years old, a parent I knew from the private school my other child went to told me most kids were reading in kindergarden and that I should start working with my child to help him be prepared for school. Things had changed in the five years since my other son started school! Of course I went right home and started doing research and found the Bob books. My son was reading at a 10th grade level in 2nd grade and is in all advanced/honor classes now as a freshman. I credit this all to teaching him the joy of learning how to read at a young age and how rewarding it is to succeed. The reward system works well when things get a little boring when reading these books. They are very basic and I have to admit when I first saw them I wasn't sold but boy did they pay off!
