Book Reviews of Breaking Free from Emotional EatingBook Review: Good and Bad Summary: 2 Stars
I learned about the non-diet approach from Jane Hirshmann and Carol Munter's book, Overcoming Overeating (or OO). What I love about OO is that they understand how important self acceptance and size acceptance are to REALLY letting go of emotional eating. As long as there is a voice within saying, I'm only good enough if I'm thin enough, the world is an unsafe place to live. And those of us who use food to soothe anxiety, will turn to food to soothe that unsafe feeling.
Geneen's books always seem to hold that other viewpoint - that thin is better. It's often veiled our couched in terms of acceptance (which, to me, makes it a little creepy). If you want to learn about your compulsion to eat to soothe your feelings, then stick with Overcoming Overeating, or the sequel, When Women Stop Hating their Bodies.
Book Review: Excellent Book! A must-have for anyone who struggles with food. Summary: 5 Stars
This is, in my opinion, the best book written on food/weight issues I've ever read! And I've read too many to count. Geneen Roth truly knows about issues with food, weight, dieting, bingeing, & makes so much sense, I'm just sorry I didn't find this book years ago! I've been on the diet/binge cycle for close to 30 years, & since reading this book, I haven't binged in 2 months. Ms.Roth makes the reader feel good about his/her self, just the way they are, that I found I don't even want to overeat. I haven't been on my scale, but I have already lost some weight--by NOT dieting. She "gets" it, and I recomend all of her books. She is obviously intelligent, very knowledgable on the subject, & she uses humor in her books. Great books, great author!
Book Review: I could have written this book! Summary: 5 Stars
I've read several diet books in my time and while most of them were educational to some extent, none spoke to me on the level that this book does. Many of the anecdote's Geneen Roth has included in her book are seemingly taken directly from the pages of MY life. Her encouraging dialog has let me realize that I am not alone and more importantly has helped me start to transform how I eat and more importantly view food. For anyone who is an emotional eater, who sneaks food, who binges or engages in other similar activities, this easy to read book is worth a look. It could help you better understand your motivations and enable the changes you want, but feel you can't make.
Book Review: Very helpful book Summary: 5 Stars
This is a really great book to help with emotional and stress over-eating. I have gotten worse and worse in my emotional over eating, and I have read and tried countless diets to try to find help. I have even gone to 3 different counselors in the past few years to try to get help, but I still have not found the solution to my behavior. She approaches the problem of emotional overeating in a very kind and understanding way, her non-judgemental approach makes you feel understood and capable of stopping the crazy behavior of overeating. I definitely feel like this book is the answer that I have been looking for.
Book Review: The Book that Saved Me Summary: 5 Stars
This book completely transformed my view of food. It truly is all in our perspective of how we look at a sitation and Geneen Roth helps us to love ourselves, truly. She describes her own pain and suffering with compulsive eating and allows us to remember that there are many other women out there feeling the same way. I read this book for the first time when I was sixteen and was able to stop bingeing for a year! Now, I am rereading it at 19, after going through a hard time, and once again practicing her teachings. I love her. She is such a wonderful inspiration and has completely changed my life.
