Book Review: Watch out for those gators!

I also am a big fan of much of Dorothea Benton Frank's work, particularly "Sullivan's Island" and "Pawley's Island." The colorful characters, the language, and the clear love of place is so appealing. I wanna be a Geechee Girl, even though I have been a Northerner all my life. I would not say however that this book had quite the pull on emotion that her others have had. I agree also that more of Betts' backstory since arriving in New York would have been nice.
I don't agree though that Betts was wrong to keep the baby a secret. She had lost everything and everyone and I don't see who would have been there for her in any way. J.D. loved her, but not enough to insist that his mother treat her and her family with simple common decency. Louisa already hated Betts, what would she do to her child, particularly an illegitimate one? Adrian was a young adult and should have been able to understand her decisions. Mainly, though I thought the book frustrating and difficult to read because of the complacency of the characters and their refusal to stand up for themselves and the people they loved. Louisa was a toxic, hateful woman who made her abuse of others a way of life, and everyone just took it, to the ruination of their own lives. Joanie was an equally disturbed person with equally unjustified hatred of Betts, abusing their aged father, forcing him to live in squalor, isolating him physically and emotionally. Betts didn't say a word. But, hooray, Joanie found a man and was miraculously redeemed, by the power of sex, I guess!! The phrase "she means well" was applied to both Louisa and Joanie at least once and given the depth of what they were capable of, made no sense. Why couldn't Betts channel the righteous anger of Susan Hamilton and have a couple of "come to Jesus" meetings with these hateful people?
This book also has the required best friend, again one who is available to heroine night or day, willing and able to give heroine anything in the world that she needs. If they sell those at Walmart, I want one.
Summary of Bulls Island
Elizabeth "Betts" McGee loved those lazy afternoons on pristine Bulls Island in the Carolina Lowcountry. But everything came crashing down when tragic fate?coupled with nasty rumor and innuendo?ended her engagement to Charleston golden boy J.D. Langley of the fabulously wealthy (and fabulously snooty) Langley clan. Betts left soon after, and she hasn't been back in nearly twenty years.
Successfully reinventing herself in New York City, Betts is now a top banking executive and heading up the most important project of her career, but it'll transform the untouched island she loved in her youth into something unrecognizable. And it's forcing her to return to the bosom of her estranged family, where she may not be welcomed with open arms. Worse still, it's uniting her with ex-flame J.D., who's changed . . . but perhaps not enough.
And then there's that crazy alligator . . .
