Book Reviews of Burning BrightBook Review: A decent book... Summary: 4 Stars
Like others have said, not as good as her previous books. In fact, I only bought it because she wrote it- had it been by another author, I'd have not even looked at it twice. I read it in a day and a half, so it moves pretty fast. Unlike what I read in other reviews, I don't feel the characters were "stock characters." In fact, I found them to be complicated, believable, and incredibly human. It was the events of the book that seemed to be slow rather than the characters. The ending, while not disappointing, was not quite satisfying upon reading it, but made sense after a few minutes of reflection. Not the best book I've read, and I don't think it will have a second reading for years, but definately worth reading at least once.
Book Review: Nothing Like Girl With a Pearl Earring Summary: 2 Stars
After reading Girl with a Pearl Earring I picked up "Burning Bright" and was very let down. I agree with other reviewers, the characters are too emphasized where William Blake is too much of a vague reference, almost as if Tracy Chevalier was afraid to assign him dialogue in case she be proved wrong. I truly didn't care for any of the characters and was always hoping some*thing* would happen. There was no climatic ending, it fizzled out and a nice bow tied things up. It's obvious Chevalier puts effort into creating a realistic era. Needed a lot of work on plot, dialogue and action/events.
I'd skip this one.
Book Review: Boring, what's the point? Summary: 1 Stars
I totally do not recommend this book. She is a talented writer, I wonder if she had an idea and then couldn't develop it and just finished it up quickly to get to print. The plot never got interesting, the characters aren't very developed and the part involving William Blake is minimal. He was a backdrop, as another reviewer said. This is more about a neighborhood and some kids in 17c England. The only thing I gathered from this was how dismal life was back then. Read "the Lady and the Unicorn" or "the Girl with a Pearl Earring" instead. This was a waste and disappointment.
Book Review: Interesting Story Summary: 4 Stars
I find anything about London interesting, especially history so I enjoyed this book. A bit of a Dickensian feel to it. I did not see any similarity to the "bogus" patriotism after 9-11 in the scenes of signature collecting and the patriotic rally. I don't remember anyone coming around collecting signatures after 9-11. I do remember all the flags on cars which didn't bother me a bit. Not sure where the previous reviewer was going with that. There's a world of difference in the conditions we live under than in London in the time of the French revolution.
Book Review: great stuff! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a big fan of Tracy Chevalier and bought this book as a holiday read. I really enjoy feeling immersed in another time period, learning how people lived while being fully engaged in an engaging story. This book was unputdownable and over way too soon!
