Book Reviews of Canon EOS 50D Digital Field GuideBook Review: A Must have Guide for the Canon 50D Summary: 5 Stars
This digital field guide is between concise and comprehensive. It tells you how to set up, how to control exposure and focus, color quality control, customizing those pesky custom functions, and shooting live view along with tethering notes.
I've read two other Canon 50D books as well as the manual. This IS the book to get! It enhances the local issues of the 50D with use of flash, ambient light, lens selection and metering concerns. The book takes the basic 50D concepts-->advanced information and enters into practical "Field" issues: Macro, portrait, landscape, event and action/sports problems.
This easy to read field guide will allow you to use all of the advanced features of the 50D and elevate your skill level.
I have taken classes with the author and not only is she a great instructor but a great writer. If you own or thinking of owning a Canon 50D don't leave home without this fine book. It's easy to read and filed with golden nuggets of invaluable advise.
Book Review: informative Summary: 4 Stars
I just upgraded to a 50D from a point and shoot camera. I gotta say the possibilities are endless. This book is fairly good and points out a lot of those possibilities. The first time I read it a lot of the things sounded greek to me and I had to spend a lot of time shooting and comparing ISO, shutter speeds, and F stops before any of it started making sense. Now, I go back and read some of the things and they make more sense. There are still a lot of things on the book that are unclear but the more I shoot the more it makes sense.
If you are completely new to DSLR's (like I was) this book is a little advanced. With the help of other tutorials on line like picturecorrectdotcom and also your camera manual (reading the manual is a must) this book will help.
Overall this book is a good reference point but the only way to truly learn to shoot is to just turn off the auto settings and experience with manual settings on your own until you start getting good pictures.
Book Review: The ONLY 50D guide you need! Summary: 5 Stars
This book takes the place of the owner's manual. The 50D is my fourth Canon DSLR. I was fortunate to discover Charlotte Lowrie's Digital Field Guide with my first Canon and with each camera after, I have immediately bought her guidebook. The 50D edition does not disappoint. The language is clear and the illustrations are great. The book provides all the information you could ever need to get the most out of the 50D whether you are a beginner or a more experienced shooter.
The Digital Field Guide is more than just a manual for the 50D however; it is also a solid guide to using the camera in the real world. There is a very useful section on selecting and using lenses and also on flash photography. Even the appendices are useful: one covers exposure, another covers maintenance of the 50D. A highlight, and a strong suit of the author, is the section on RAW capture; I took her RAW class @ BetterPhoto.com and she really knows her subject.
Book Review: A must-have book if you own a 50D Summary: 5 Stars
I just recently purchased the Canon EOS 50D Digital Field Guide and am so impressed with it that I am driven to write my first Amazon review. I am still reading the book but so far it has exceeded my expectations. The writing is clear and interesting, the author obviously has both the experience and knowledge to provide great background information and useful tips. I have read the manual and another book on the 50D but I have still learned information about the 50D (and digital photography) that I didn't know. It is a wonderful book, I highly recommend it. I plan on reading it again once I'm done. There is so much to learn and this book really covers the information.
Book Review: Exactly what I was looking for. Summary: 5 Stars
This field guide was recommended to me by a few fellow photogs. What a great field guide to help me learn my new 50d! It is well laid out and easy to understand. I NEVER would have picked up on half of the tricks & tools my 50d is capable of without this book! (And yes! I have read the owners manual numerous times). Reading the manual that comes with your camera is important. But getting a copy of this field guide will help you sharpen your skills. This Guide in combination with Understanding Exposure will help you build a GREAT base knowledge of your camera and photography in general! Get it! NOW!
