Book Reviews of Careless in Red (Inspector Lynley)Book Review: Sadly, I Could Not Finish This Book Summary: 1 Stars
Ms. George is one of my favorite authors. With 200 pages to go, I simply had to put this book down. I just couldn't take any more of it.
Not that it's badly written; she's a strong literary writer. I just found it to be over 700 pages of boring, rhetoric dialogue. It's much too long with much too much being said.
The venerable Thomas Lynley & Sgt. Barbara Havers can't save this one. Havers is one of Elizabeth George's best characters & she doesn't enter this story until over page 270.
I found most all the other characters a bore. The story? How many times can the same things be said in different words?
I just got to the point where I no longer cared who did it.
The book's saving grace is that annoying, whining cow Helen is history. Other than that; the book is awful
Book Review: does she get paid by the word? Summary: 1 Stars
At least one-third of this book is useless fluff that should have been deleted by a brutal editor. George loves to show off how she's researched a topic for each book, whether it's relevant to the plot or not. This time it's surfing. Yawn. The book is cluttered with red herring characters who contribute nothing. You spend most of your time trying to keep them all straight. There's precious little about Lynley and what there is makes no sense. Havers puts in a perfunctory appearance later on. The Inspector Lynley books have become bloated, lazy and self-indulgent. I honestly don't know why I keep reading them.
Book Review: Huge disappointment Summary: 1 Stars
Except for "What Came Before He Shot her" I am a loyal fan of Ms. George's Lynley/Havers novels. After the disappointment of her last book I was looking forward to "Careless in Red" which promised a return to the beloved characters of Thomas Lynley and Barbara Havers. Yes, the characters have returned but the story is far too long, with useless details and ridiculous names. Why do authors feel that they simply cannot stick with something that works? Just a return to the wonderful stories, characters and plots of her earlier books. Is that too much for Ms. George's die hard fans to ask for???
Book Review: Elizabeth George's best in years Summary: 5 Stars
I am a long time fan of the Thomas Lynley novels, but I had been disappointed in the last few years. With CARELESS IN RED, Elizabeth George redeems herself and the character of Thomas Lynley. Devastated by the loss of his wife, Lynley has literally walked away from his life. It takes a murder to bring him back, to reconcile him with the idea of recovery. This book explores the sometimes difficult relationships between fathers and sons, the futility of parents trying to protect their children from making mistakes, and the irrationality of obsession. I recommend it highly.
Book Review: Quality is better than quantity Summary: 3 Stars
This book was a great improvement over Elizabeth George's previous novel, which I couldn't force myself to finish. I enjoyed the Cornwall setting and the surfer characters, however the book was just too long. For a 500+ page novel, not a lot actually happens. Tighter editing and fewer of the jarring similes would have improved the book. I will keep reading this series because I like the characters of Lynley, Havers and co., but I would be really pleased if the next book is only 400 pages.
