Book Reviews of Carlson's Guide to Landscape PaintingBook Review: A Classic and for very good reasons Summary: 5 Stars
Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting is simply the best all-around reference guide for anyone (beginner to professional artist) interested in mastering landscape painting. Every time I pick up this book I learn something useful regarding making creative, finished paintings. While the writing style is a bit dated, if the reader accepts this as part of the book's charm, it's an easy read. The final chapter is a wonderfully inspiring gift from a master artist.
Book Review: Superb instructional book Summary: 5 Stars
I have read many books on how to paint over the years and some have been more or less useful. This book however is in a league apart. I would go as far as to say that if I had had just a small part of the information contained in these pages when I needed my painting would have improved years ago. If you want to understand how to paint landscapes effectively and understand the importance of sound basic principles and technique, don't hesitate, buy this book.
Book Review: Terrific book that answers questions for landscape painters! Summary: 4 Stars
The author seems to have gone out of his way to write a book covering every aspect of landscape painting and has done it well. He starts with his ideas on how to approach painting as a whole, continues with the mechanics of painting wherein he discusses the tools necessary, and covering subjects such as angles and values, design, perspective, light and color. An informative book for the landscape painting enthusiast. I recommend it highly!
Book Review: impressions Summary: 4 Stars
Based on reading several chapters this book is filled with lots of insights about how things behave in nature:trees, clouds, etc. and how to perceive these things and approach them in painting. The intensity of the author's own process of looking yields new perspectives for those of us who may have thought we understood such things as trees and clouds. The occasional charmingly dated phrase only adds to the enjoyment of reading this book.
Book Review: Carlson's Guide To Landscape Painting is without color illustrations Summary: 4 Stars
I really liked the instruction outlined in this book. Although this wonderful artist is deceased his work and instruction is timeless. The only thing that kept me from giving this edition a 5 star rating was it's total lack of color illustrations. I wish this would have been mentioned in the description so that I could have sought a version that contained color illustrations. I'm sure one exists because his work has been around for years.
