Book Review: THE best landscape book I own.
Summary: 5 Stars
If I could only have one art instruction book, this would be it. I like that the artist's images are reproduced in black and white - better to understand the importance of value in a painting. This book is AWESOME! Excellent explanations of all aspects of landscape painting. I just bought a second copy in hard cover since my current copy is full of my highlighting and note taking. Carlson's guide is a classic.Book Review: A Tool for Teaching

I am only half way through this book but am so glad my teacher recommended it. I have to read some of the lessons two or three times to be sure I understand all the fine points, and I am reading it very slowly.
When I finish, I'll go back and highlight passages for reference when I encounter a problem.
Very well written.

Carlson really knows how to explain things in very simple terms. He gives us priorities for how to think about light and how it hits many of the natural things we see in landscape painting. This is a must read for anyone who does landscape painting. Do not be put off by the fact that there are few pictures. The text greatly overwhelms this.Book Review: Good book for the beginner, but need guidence from teacher.

I had my first landscape painting class and this was the textbook for that class 30 years ago. It has good pointers for the beginner artist and puts stress on the correct value more than the color itself. The author considers that as long as you have all your values correct no matter what color you use the painting will look good.Book Review: Great book for intermediate to advanced painters

This book was recommended by an art teacher and is well worth going through to refine your technique. I thought it was well written and a great instructional tool that helped with landscape paintings layout and thinking through to the end of a painting and keeping your goals in mind and ending up with a successful work of art.
