Book Reviews of Carrion ComfortBook Review: Great book! Summary: 5 Stars
Why I think it's a great book? The author gives an explanation for people who can do more than ordinary people and what they do with them. Just by manipulating them with their minds they make history for the ordinary people. It gives an explanation how people like Hitler in the past could control so many people. Besides it's a fascinating story with a breathtaking ending. Normally I hate to read books for the second or third time, but this is a book you can read many times to understand all the happenings. I can recommend it to anyone who likes complicated stories with humor and a lot of action ! I sure hope there will be a sequel one day (I hope you read this, Dan). From a Dutch admirer.
Book Review: A bit too long Summary: 4 Stars
This was a good book that could have been great if it had been about two or three-hundred pages shorter. I agree that there was a bit too much detail, which is something I usually enjoy, but in this book, a lot of the details were unnecessary and only slowed down the story. There were times when I was totally engrossed in the story, like when it was told from Melanie Fuller's point of view. She was one of the most loathsome characters I've ever read about, but that made her interesting. But then other times I found myself wondering if I was ever going to finish this thing. It's a good read, but make sure you have lots of free time to read it, or you'll never get through it.
Book Review: Ignore the naysayers - CARRION COMFORT is amazing. Summary: 5 Stars
I am amazed to find that there is such a schism regarding CARRION COMFORT. It seems to be a real love/hate book. Which surprises me because it's one of the most compulsively readable novels I've ever read. I would prefer not to give away anything to the first time reader (other reviewers have not been so considerate) but I will say that Simmons takes a fabulous premise and works it until your eyes pop. I really can't see how anyone decided that this story was boring -- unless they simply didn't have the patience for a long novel. But if you're waffling on reading it as a result of these mixed reviews I strongly encourage you to pick it up.
Book Review: To paraphrase Abbie Hoffman: "READ THIS BOOK" Summary: 5 Stars
For years I have told people to read this book and have offered to reimburse them for the purchase price if they didn't absolutely love it; my wallet remains full. This book is Simmon's at his (and perhaps, everyone's) absolute best. The large scale scenes are so visual that you get the idea you're watching 70mm with surround sound, and yet the internal turmoil and evil of the characters is what is ultimately so terrifying. There are certain books that define authors: McCammon's "Boy's Life", Straub's "Ghost Story" and King's "The Shining". This is Dan Simmon's contribution to that list, and it may be the best of all!
Book Review: Good Story - Bad editing Summary: 3 Stars
After Reading his Hyperion series a friend suggested I read this book. (Didn't like Hyperion) I read it and was liking it...until they got to Philadelphia. Once they got to Philly, the story bogged and bogged. It seemed like Philly was supposed to be the climax and Simmons decided to carry the book on even further to a penultimate ending instead of the simple one he'd originally envisioned. I liked this book, but it was overly long. To me, if they had cut out half of the [stuff] in Philly, the rest of the book was okay. Give it a read. Its at least as good as most other books out there. Simmons is no King, not many are.
