Book Review: A fresh look at catalysis

The textbook of Rothenberg is a blessing to anyone who teaches or studies catalysis. It emphasizes two important and previously neglected topics in textbooks on catalysis, namely the "green" aspects of this key element of chemistry; and the emerging role of computational chemistry in the rational design and in the mechanistic understanding of catalytic processes (Chapter 6). The textbook leads the scholar gradually from basic concepts of green chemistry, through basic concepts in catalysis and surface science, emphasizes - and rightly so - heterogeneous processes, and provides ample examples from currently practiced industrial catalytic processes. Yet another unique feature of the book is its unified vision of the whole field in its most general definition: Experiments and theory, biocatalytic processes and classical catalytic processes, all emerge as one comprehensive field.
The full referencing, which includes also the titles of the papers, is a blessing, and serves as an invaluable additional source of information. The web site which accompanies the book ([...]) is a treasure-place by itself with plenty of useful features, such as lecture slides which accompany each chapter, and plenty of exercises.
This is a "must" book for teachers and for anyone who wishes to get a modern overview of catalysis.

Summary of Catalysis: Concepts and Green Applications
This introductory textbook covers all aspects of catalysis. It also bridges computational methods, industrial applications and green chemistry, with over 700 references. The author, a renowned researcher in catalysis, teaches scientific writing as well as chemistry. This makes him the ideal person to write such a textbook. The effectiveness of his practical approach has been well proven in courses for undergraduates and graduates (in 2007 he was voted "lecturer of the year" by the chemistry students).Following an introduction to green chemistry and the basics of catalysis, the book covers biocatalysis, homogeneous catalysis and heterogeneous catalysis, as well as computer applications in catalysis research.
Each chapter also features integrated exercises that help students prepare for their exams.
