Book Reviews of Cathedral

Book Review: Insightful
Summary: 3 Stars

Given 9/11, an international terrorist attack within the US is believable and almost expected. But this predates that horrible day, and captures some of the confusion such an event would mushroom.

There are a broad range of characters in the book and they all have moderate substance to them.

The author does a good job of portraying the sentiments of an "occupied" people. And, quite rightly, paints a dark picture of the ways, means and morality of British intelligence agencies. It also captures the ridiculous, irresponsible nature of bureaucracies and politicians when they are plunged into unfamiliar territory.

Book Review: Great Suspenseful Novel
Summary: 5 Stars

Besides this book, I've read "The Charm School," "Word of Honor," "The General's Daughter," and "The Gold Coast."

They are all excellent books.

Throughout reading this exciting story, I could definitely visualize all of the details. And I found myself saying, "What if ..." several times.

Reading this book also opened my mind to being curious about the architecture of churches.

And when you read this book your heart will race as you become drawn into the drama that you just have to be part of.

Book Review: Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Summary: 1 Stars

I can't believe I wasted a week of my life reading this tripe. It reads like a mediocre made-for-TV movie, complete with campy dialogue and tired Irish stereotypes that will make you cringe. I enjoyed Gold Coast and thought I'd try some more of his work, but this will be the last DeMille novel I ever waste time on. Even if you're just looking for mindless summer beach reading, college-educated readers should try elsewhere. I should have known better. The decline in quality of popular novels is surely a sign of the approaching apocalypse.

Book Review: Yet again surprised
Summary: 4 Stars

This was definitely an interesting book. A cathedral in New York is taken over by an IRA offshoot. The characters, some you love and hate. Demille's characters are amazing. It's the same in all 5 of this books that I've read. There's no sappy dialogue, or stupid replies. Everything is witty and sharp. I wish that I had read the one with a map of the church, but after awhile I got pretty good at imagining what the inside of the cathedral looked like. In the end it definitely had me waiting with held breath to see what would happen.

Book Review: A must-read for any fan of the Irish
Summary: 5 Stars

As someone who follows the troubles in Northern Ireland, and an addict of Irish legend and history, I found Cathedral truly mesmerizing. Demille captures the essence of Irish nationalism by drawing upon Ireland's unique history. In doing so, he not only brings the characters of Cathedral to life, but Finn Mac Cumail, the Fenians, and the Easter rising of 1916 as well. The book is a fast-paced, heart stopping read. A definate must!
