Book Reviews of Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic

Book Review: One of the most informative books on celiac disease
Summary: 5 Stars

Being in the health care profession, I have been searching for a book that deals with celiac disease with more of a scientific basis. This book is the best one I have found for this and is also very easy reading and informative for everyone. I hope more people read this and then pursue diagnosing their symptoms to help find the underlying cause of the problem, whether it be celiac disease or something else. I believe celiac disease is very underdiagnosed and it can kill you. I pursued the underlying cause of severe fatigue, which turned out to be a severe B-12 deficiency, which turned out to be celiac disease. I had neurological symptoms in my peripheral and central nervous system and know that diagnosing this saved my life. I would highly recommend everyone to read it as well as get ones for their friends or pass it along to everyone. If they are not diagnosed with celiac disease then good, but if it can help save others, this book highlights so much information regarding the disease.

Book Review: Very Well Presented
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the third celiac book I have read since diagnosis and the best one so far. The authors do an excellent job of explaining what celiac is who gets it, and why it is difficult to get diagnosed. The information is presented clearly, in well-defined categories, and without resorting to jargon.

Symptoms are described in great detail, with other possible diagnoses given for each. Unlike other books which essentially tried to pin every symptom known to man to gluten, this book offers much more balanced information.

for those already diagnosed, there is much helpful information, including not only foods to avoid but much dispelling of myth about foods which are safe to eat despite common assumptions. The authors also discuss 'survival' strategies for coping with dietary limitations, what to do with celiac children, even the current state of celiac research.

This book is an excellent resource and I ezxpect I will return to it many times.

Book Review: Outstanding Information!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book was so helpful with understanding Celiac Disease! I have been living with celiac for over 10 years and yet never fully understood the disease. Dr. Green (author and dir. of Celiac Disease Ctr at Columbia Univ.) explains all the lingo, symptoms, and seriousness of celiac. I read this book in 1 week, I couldn't put it down! This will definitely be my 'go-to' book regarding medical terms, tests, and as a general celiac reference guide. There are tips, nutrition info., and genetic info. for celiac patients and family members. The information included comes from a well-known celiac researcher and doctor (not someone who has researched celiac just to publish a book) who has worked in this field for at least 15 years! It is a book that truly explains in 'layman's' terms the disease. I recommend this book for anyone looking for answers or guidance!

Book Review: Comprehensive, well written and human
Summary: 5 Stars

Having multiple food intolerences that went mis-diagnosed for years, I am quite familiar with this genre of writing. From this background, I will unequivocably say that this book is incredible. It gives a wealth of information about celiac disease specifically as well as a much-appreciated, comprehensive overview of the background to it--the complexity of the digestive systems and how they work and can go wrong. It is written beautifully with a blend of anecdotes and scientific fact that is a pleasure to read. The authors are obviously very familiar with the difficulties, stress, and pain that can accompany all stages of learning of and living with a gluten-free diet. It's tone is honest, extremely positive, and uplifting. I recomend this book to all interested in this topic, celiacs and non-celiacs alike.

Book Review: Informative, Up-to-date, and Easy to Understand
Summary: 5 Stars

I was diagnosed with celiac disease in the fall of 2007, and I immediately went to the library to check out the most recent book on celiac disease. This was it, and it was so excellent I decided to buy a copy to have as a constant reference. This book has the latest information on celiac disease. Dr. Peter Green is the head of the celiac disease center at Columbia University; therefore, he is an authority on the subject. The co-author, Rory Jones, has celiac disease herself. The book was written with understanding and compassion, and the disease and potential complications are explained in a clear, easy to understand manner. If you have struggled with gastro-intestinal problems for years, and the doctors can't figure out what's wrong with you, you should read this book.
