Book Reviews of Certain Girls: A NovelBook Review: disappointing read Summary: 2 Stars
when i found out this was the sequel to good in bed, i was excited. i found good in bed while browsing the book store and i ended up loving it. cannie was a feisty, intelligent and funny character and quite a few times i laughed out loud at the diaglog in the book. this "sequel" however was a disappointment. cannie seemed to evolve into an overprotective parent with only a fraction of her humor and life as she had in good in bed. i wasn't expecting a continuation of the book, but some parallels would have been nice. i also was not happy with what happened to peter. what little bastion of happiness that cannie had in her entire life was destroyed. that made me sad and angry, and seemed uncalled for. i wish i had taken it out of the library instead of buying the hardcover at 25 bucks.
Book Review: I truly loved this book Summary: 5 Stars
I just finished reading this book last night. I realize that others might not have liked or appreciated the last part of this novel, but I found it to be so touching and so tragic, yet uplifting as well. I never expected how the book evolved and was so moved by its unexpectedness. The circumstances were truly like real life itself, with all its ups and downs and the roller-coaster-speed changes that we can be handed without warning. I enjoyed and appreciated all the characters as well. They were so clearly developed that I could "see" each person with all their quirks and charm (and blinking Bruce). This was a funny, entertaining and bittersweet novel and I enjoyed it immensely. Bravo and thank you, Jennifer Weiner!
Book Review: Ending doesn't seam well with the rest of the book! Summary: 2 Stars
I love Jennifer Weiner, but most of her readers will be disappointed by the ending of this novel. What a waste of a great book. I don't understand why it was necessary, either. It was not at all needed and didn't make sense at all. Hasn't Cannie been through enough Jennifer, SERIOUSLY! Oh well, I normally don't write reviews, but I felt I had to warn Jennifer's loyal readers. The plot twist towards the end of the novel is out of character with Jennifer's light, fun, and feel good books that we have all come to love. It doesn't have to be all rainbows and kittens, of course, but this ending just felt strange, and really ruined the rest of the book for me, that I had loved until that point. BE WARNED!
Book Review: Ruined Good in Bed Summary: 2 Stars
I was so excited to read this book that I purchased an advanced copy from a bookstore, years ago now. Good in Bed had been one of my favorite books for years. However, Certain Girls ruined Good in Bed for me. I can no longer read Good in Bed without feeling a sense of loss and disappointment knowing how Weiner finished the story. Cannie is no longer the likable, humorous woman she once was, and Joy is not a fully developed character. The ending was cruel and made no sense in the context of either book. I think Weiner wants to be taken more seriously than she is and throws in these curveballs to try to rise above the typical chick lit genre she should be residing in.
Book Review: What was the author thinking? Summary: 2 Stars
Let me start by saying that I loved Good in Bed and this sequel was not worth the money spent. What happen to Candace? Gone was her wit and spark that made you fall in love with her. She was such a nag in this book. And the daughter was so ungrateful, but then most teenagers are. But killing Peter is where I draw the line. That was such a cruel and horrible mistake that made me want to stop reading. I am so glad that I read a review that prepared me for it, but even then it still seems like such a cruel joke. I would give this book 1 1/2 star is it would let me. Save your money, I wish someone had warn me.
