Book Reviews of Charley Harper: An Illustrated LifeBook Review: The Family Treasure Summary: 5 Stars
We also saw the program on CBS Sunday Morning and immediately purchased the book. We have had it now for 3 or 4 months. My husband and I bring it out often and keep looking and looking. You see something different every time; the complexity of the simple and the simplicity of the complex. This man's mind was amazing. We are going to buy another one so we can dissasmble it and create a wall of pictures in our son's room that can be changed from time to time. It is one of my favorite treasures. I can't wait until my kids are a little older to look at it with them.
We are not graphic artists or book people. We just buy what we love. Our book does not seem to have any issues or problems. Just beautiful picutures that inspire our mind. Oh and the box it comes in is beautiful too.
Book Review: Simply a masterpiece about a master artist! Summary: 5 Stars
I need help. I cannot stop looking at this book. I have other things to do today but none more inspirational than looking through this beautiful thing. Charley Harper had so many styles and such a joyful way to look at the world that his work can't help but bring a smile to your face. His sense of design, color and composition are remarkable.
As for the book, it is a work of art unto itself. It's huge. It has a slipcase. It has it's own customized box. It beautifully printed. It is designed and noted by Todd Oldham who has taken obvious pleasure in bringing Charley Harper's work to a wider audience.
My recommendation, buy two. One for you and one to give away to your favorite creative person. Now let me get back to obsessing about Charley Harper!
Book Review: Charley Harper and Todd Oldham: Two Great Artists Summary: 5 Stars
This collection of Charley Harpers lifes work is the most beautiful book I have ever seen, surely the greatest book I own. Todd Oldham did an exquisite job in honoring his friend and mentor with this collection. I was so overjoyed when I received the book in the mail I could hardly wait to open it. From the interviews to the artwork you will look at this book over and over again. I stayed up well into the night when I started to read the book the day it arrived, only to get up early the next morning to start it again. You will love the quality of the paper it is printed on and the artwork done by an artist I have discovered just now in my life, thank goodness.
Book Review: basicly, the best book ever Summary: 5 Stars
long overdue coffee table quality book about obscure but highly influencial mid-century illustrator Charles Harper.
everyone from Shag, Tim Biskup, Geoff McFetridge to Ren & Stimpy and Todd Oldham owes this guy. it's not just that he can paint like a mo' fo'--it's his unique ability to distill the complexities of nature and animals into their most poetic and graphic form. his best work shown much larger than they were originally printed. the only drag is that most of it has been reproduced from previously printed pieces (I'm assuming the original paintings are long lost), but the fine printing and great editing make up for it. pricey but essential.
Book Review: Worth every penny Summary: 5 Stars
This is a pricey book, however, it is the ultimate compilation of the work of an amazing but underappreciated artist. The volume is massive, and browsing through these highly stylized images, one is transported into the artist's world, courtesy of Todd Oldham, who wisely chose a supersized horizontal format to showcase the art. Oldham has created a beautifully packaged and produced homage to Harper that will leave you breathless. Harper's shapes and color sense are magnificent and surprisingly subtle, his economy of line the epitome of modernism, yet there is a human appeal.
This is a treasure trove of inspiration for any visual artist.
