Book Reviews of Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt: A Novel

Book Review: Who knew?
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't know what I expected when I ordered the book, I bought it because Rice's new book Christ the Lord: The Road to Cana (Christ the Lord)piqued my curiosity at the store and because I loved Memnoch The Devil for the way it made me think about what I thought I knew about my religion.
My first (and immediate) reaction was, leave it to Ann Rice to have the audacity use first person narration as God! What else has she got in store for me? I couldn't put it down! I have recomended the book to every recovery Roman Catholic I know. Loaned it out twice, and plan to at least skim it again before I read the next one, which I wanted to wait a while to do so that I could reflect more on this one.
I still can't say exactly what my reaction is, only that I'm still reflecting, that it seems to have given an element of believability to things I dismissed as religious propaganda.
A great read for the faithful and the fallen!

Book Review: Who is Christ?
Summary: 5 Stars

Anne Rice has left behind the fangs of vampires and seduction of other-world denizens to embrace in novel form the hereto unknown years of the Christ child. Rich as always in accurate portrayal of history and essentially unwavering from traditional assumptions of the Holy One, Anne wraps the reader in a warm blanket of familiarity. We play with Christ in the streets of Alexandria and witness miracles that even He does not understand. His puzzlement over what we know as Divine Power makes the Christ a person as perhaps we have never fully understood.

The story is far from complete as the Holy Family moves "Out of Egypt" but "Christ the Lord" is rich and vibrant and allows you to consider, however briefly, the reality of Christ - the boy. The end will simply leave you anxious for the next work to introduce you to Christ, the teenager and eventually, adult. Believers or those who want to believe will find the person of Christ becomes far more real to them as a result of Ms. Rice's work.

Book Review: Did anyone edit this book?
Summary: 2 Stars

I am trying desperately to wade through this book that I really do want to like. I am intrigued and interested in the subject. It should be fascinating. But, I want to throw the book across the room! I can't get past the poorly written sentences, the badly divided paragraphs, and the shallow story development, etc. I understand that it is supposed to sound like a seven year old is talking, but it should not read like a seven year old wrote it. I've read a few of Ann's other books and I cannot believe that what I am reading is not the first draft that hasn't even been proofread by the author. I just want to take a red pen to the book! One example from chapter 21, page 229: "The second crop of figs was pulling down our old tree in the courtyard, and the olive pickers beating the branches in the orchards, and I felt a happiness I'd never known, and I knew that I felt it." I didn't misquote that. Maybe I got an un-edited copy, if that is possible. I have the sequel already, so I hope it is a better read.

Book Review: Thought provoking!
Summary: 5 Stars

by Emily Placido, Julita's Sands: A Memoir

Anne Rice does a wonderful writing job of making Jesus believable as a child and the Son of God. The story is told from Jesus' point of view. He is a young boy who performs miracles and questions his ability to do so. He turns to his mother and father for answers but is encouraged to search for the answers within himself. This book made me look at Jesus CHrist in a different light, fro another perspective. Most stories about Jesus are about his pilgrimage, gathering his disciples and about his teachings. THis book is about a 7 year old child, wholike all children likes to play and have fun with his friends. I love the premise and Rice is fantastic here. I highly recomend this book!

Book Review: Excellent Even if You're Not a Christian
Summary: 5 Stars

I wasn't a Christian when I first read this book. As a newly-minted 'bably' Christian, I'm re-reading it and I find it to be just as good as it was the first time around. It's not 'fawning' the way that some Christian writing can be, but that is likely because of who the author is more than anything else.

Despite my new-found faith, I can't abide most Christian fiction, it's just too 'vanilla' for me. This book is an exception. I found it fascinating to read and I applaud Ms. Rice for taking on what had to be a lot of criticism from small-minded people.

I did enjoy the book the first time I read it, even as an atheist. Anne Rice did a wonderful job with her 1st person narrative and I don't find it at all blasphemous.

I kind of wish it were a bit longer, though.
