Book Reviews of Christine Falls: A Novel

Book Review: A Decent Effort --- No More
Summary: 3 Stars

Literary Thriller is my favorite genre, so I was very excited to take up this effort by a Booker Award winning author. The book was fine, and I had no trouble making it through, but as literature or as a thriller, it is no great shakes.

The strengths of the book are the 1950's Dublin setting, a very interesting lead character, the noir mood and pace the author sets, and the author's stylish, if slightly repetitive, technique of introducing a new character or situation as if you already knew the character, and then providing the background while moving forward. On the down side, though, the potential higher brow literary elements---contemplations of identity questions, family relationships, family secrets, and the church---are more flat and cliched than insightful or thought provoking. Similarly, with the mystery, you do want to know the outcome and explanation, but it is hardly thrilling or surprising, and, as the book comes towards its ending, one of the "bad guys" goes off the rails in his evil in a manner gratuitous to the story and unsatisfying in its resolution.

The main character has enough promise that I kept expecting the book to be better than it was, and I might, for this reason, give the sequel a try.

Summary of Christine Falls: A Novel

The hero of Christine Falls, Quirke, is a surly pathologist living in 1950s Dublin. One night, after having a few drinks at a party, he returns to the morgue to find his brother-in-law tampering with the records on a young woman's corpse. The next morning, when his hangover has worn off, Quirke reluctantly begins looking into the woman's history. He discovers a plot that spans two continents, implicates the Catholic Church, and may just involve members of his own family. He is warned--first subtly, then with violence--to lay off, but Quirke is a stubborn man. The first novel in the Quirke series brings all the vividness and psychological insight of John Banville's writing to the dark, menacing atmosphere of a first-class thriller.
