Book Reviews of City of Ashes (Mortal Instruments)Book Review: Even Better than Bones Summary: 5 Stars
When I first picked up City of Bones, I wasn't sure what to make of it. As I was reading, I fell in love. No, it's definitely not heavy reading, and yes, there is better quality prose, but the book was just so fun and made me laugh out loud (which is rare), and the writing, while not amazingly spectacular, works perfectly for the story and is far from bad.
City of Ashes was even better. The characters are the kind of people you wish you knew, but don't; yet they're also just the kids next door. They bridge the gap between the ordinary and extraordinary, and you love them all for their weaknesses and strengths.
If you love fantasy, if you love sarcastic, witty conversations, if you love star-crossed lovers...READ THIS BOOK!
Book Review: bloody nonsense Summary: 1 Stars
No, definitely not. The first book was sort of OK, the writing was better, the plot more gripping. But even the first novel suffered from this special kind of fascism that the genre seems to admire: all this "Übermenschen"-stuff: this killing, blood-splitting, flesh-disrupting, intestines-devouring rubbish. No! City of Ashes is pulp-fiction of the worst kind. Cassandra Clare changes from embarassing scenes of "teenage-schnulziness" (I have to apologize for my German background)to embarassing scenes of gory weaponism. I know I know: we are so proud of our youngsters when only they read. And we name whatever they put before their eyes a book if only this item seems to consist of letters which seem to make up a story of the clumsiest sort.
Book Review: great book (*~no spoilers~*) Summary: 3 Stars
Overall I think City of Ashes was a great book. It had a couple of prose problems and there is a shocking love triangle that continues from the first book (I may not appreciate what the author did with those characters but it did not stop me from reading it!!)But the love triangle is the reason I give it 3 stars because I do not think its fair for the author to play up an impossible romance.
On the positive side, the book was action packed and less predictable than its predecessor. The characters are interesting and colorful. And the hints of the characters secrets keep you reading and wanting more. There are also a few minor plot twist which I think should set the third book up to be very interesting!
Book Review: Not original Summary: 1 Stars
A friend gave me City of Bones & City of Ashes to read because I am a big BtVS fan. I am so very glad I did not buy them. Both books are unoriginal, dull and have such flowery prose I must have rolled my eyes 5,000 times. Teenagers do not talk like Clary, Simon or Jace in any universe I know.
Reading City of Ashes was like trying to get away from a slow moving train wreck. I wound up skimming the middle bit to get to the end as it was so tedious. Besides the obvious Buffy rip offs, the book just doesn't hold up to muster in the youth genre. I'd rather reread Holly Black or Stephenie Meyer any day of the week, then torture myself with City of Ashes again.
Book Review: It just gets better and better.........!!!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I love this trilogy. i started reading it a little while ago and had to wait a couple of months for City of Ashes, but it was totally worth it.
I wont lie, there weret iems taht i felt like throwing the book agaisnt the wall, but never the less it is worth it.
My favorite character is Jace. His sarcasm makes the book better and better. I do wish that Clary took a bigger role in the story, i mean stronger instead of needing everyone's help, but it has to do with the fact that she's new to all those things.
Cassandra has really done it with this story. I cant wait for the next one next year.
