Book Review: not based on actual body chemistry

This book was a huge disappointment.
The first six chapters of the book give reasons why someone would want to undergo a cleanse, with some background into how the author can claim an "honorary" N.D. title. But, the actual instructions for the cleanse comprise only one chapter, and only cover colon cleansing. A true cleanse will start with the colon, the progress to the kidneys, liver/gallbladder, blood and lymphatic systems. Each of these systems needs to be addressed individually to be effective. The herbal formulas in this book contain ingredients that will clean out these other systems, but to attack everything all at once will either overwhelm the body. If a person's colon isn't performing as well as it should, then any toxins dumped by the other organs into the colon will just be reabsorbed.
If you're looking for help in detoxifying your body, then I highly recommend the information on the Cure Zone web site. They provide detailed instructions for cleaning each of the major elimination organs, as well as blood and lymph. Plus, the information is free.
The biggest peeve I have with this book is erroneous chemistry presented as "fact".
Urine tests with pH strips do NOT give an accurate picture of a person's health. The urine pH will vary depending on what was eaten, but has no correlation to what is happening within the body. Plus, the body will cycle through a range of pH over a 24-hour period, with each organ going through its own cycle. It is the ability to cycle pH that is most desired, not a particular reading.
The advocation of having an "alkaline" body is bogus. An in vitro study was done with one specific strain of cancer cells. The pH of the solution used in the petri dishes was adjusted to determine what environment would kill the cancer cells. When it was found that an alkaline environment did the trick, people jumped to conclusions that if our entire body is alkaline, then we wouldn't get cancer. The problems with this are 1) in vitro doesn't take into account the complex environment of a living system, let alone people, and 2) there are many types of cancers, some of which thrive in an alkaline environment. So, anyone claiming that we should have a specific body pH has no understanding of biochemistry.
Because of his desire for an alkaline body, the author emphasizes a vegan diet, i.e., absolutely no animal products. Humans have evolved to require higher amounts of protein and fats than what the plant kingdom can provide. (There are many who would counter they're much healthier on a vegan diet, but the chemistry begs to differ.) Plus, over the course of generations people adapt to their environments, so the only "true" diet is whatever our ancestors ate. If you're an Eskimo living in the Arctic Circle, then your diet is composed almost exclusively on animal products. If you're living in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, then your diet is mostly the starchy manioc. Everyone else is somewhere in between. So, anyone claiming a one true diet has no understanding of Darwinian adaptations.

The 2007 edition of Dr. Anderson's best-seller, Cleanse & Purify Thyself, Book 1 is newly edited for the 21st century, easy-to-read and contains numerous handy references.This is probably the best book on internal cleansing that you will ever read. It tells you how to create an internal cleansing program for yourself, and it leaves you with no doubt as to why you would! This is informative and inspiring reading.
