Book Review: Useful, but engaging.

Coffman's Method is a very well written book on Conduit bending that nearly any electrician in the field can put to use. But it is not applicable to every 'Sparky' out there.
PROS: The calculations work for ALL types of conduit, whether thinwall EMT, IMC, or even Rigid. Once you understand it, you can apply it in many situations where more complicated bends may be needed. It does a great job of breaking down the reasons for the math behind the method and how it can be applied to our trade in a useful manner.
CONS: For most electricians (especially working with simple runs of EMT) this method will be cumbersome and time-consuming. I would stick with the standard simple method UNLESS you have special cases such as parallel runs that need to look perfectly uniform when changing planes. Also, many may find the multiple steps and elementary trigonometry involved to be 'overkill' and time-consuming especially when you need to get a lot of pipe up in the air quickly.
Overall, this resource can be very useful, but for me it is not something I do for every bend. I have successfully used the method for parallel rolling offsets that have to transfer from running vertically across a wall to hanging from the ceiling horizontally. And also used it with special kicks. Other than those unique cases when it is beneficial to sit down and 'do the math', it's much easier for me to stick with the standard hand-bending techniques most of us were taught early on with common angles and multipliers. When I purchased it, I got it at a good price (used, but in nearly new condition) so it was great investment for improving my skills and marketability to contractors.
