Book Reviews of Confessions of a Shopaholic (Shopaholic Series)

Book Review: Don't believe the Hype
Summary: 3 Stars

Rebecca Bloomwood has what a lot of girls would turn green with envy for. An awesome apartment in a trendy neighborhood, a job that gives her almost complete freedom, and a closet full of awesome clothes...the only problem is she can't really afford it...any of it.

The bills are piling up and Becky knows she can't keep chucking them in the dumpsters she happens to pass by on her way to work...or on the way to the stores to shop away her troubles. But one day she runs across a story in her work that she actually cares about, one that might just not only help herself, but might actually help others as well.

Ok, I have no idea whatsoever why everyone thought this book was so amazing. Yes, it was fun, it had a good storyline, and was a relaxed chicklit book that would essentially be a fast beach or plane read. That's about where the good points end however I'm afraid.

Throughout the entire book I just could not fall in love with Becky. I felt she was nothing more than just a whiny child who couldn't control her impulses. She would also lie and cheat, and was not above being dishonest to her boss and family. She would just get herself into these crazy situations that she only made worse by creating more lies and fibs. Instead of being funny however, I found these situations to be embarrassing. I was embarrassed for her and found myself skimming over a lot of them.

Bottom line, I guess I just didn't like "Confessions of a Shopaholic." I wanted to like it, I tried to like it, I finished the book and found it to be moderately entertaining, but entertainment value alone does not make for a fantastic read. Because I could not form a relationship with the main character I could just not form a liking for "Confessions." Was it worth a read? Sure. Will I pick up the next book...I'm on the fence. If there's nothing better around maybe, but I have a lot of books in my pile to read at the moment, and I don't think I would insert the next book in the series anytime soon.

Book Review: Shopaholic is a Hit!
Summary: 5 Stars

I must admit that I got a little bit edgy as I started to read this book. Past due bills, maxed-out credit cards - who wants to be reminded?? But then the story took over and I fell for Becky Bloomwood - our heroine and financial journalist. She's fashionably fabulous and just like her, who can resist a good sale? I loved the "Brit-speak" and found myself calculating the currency exchange between pounds and dollars - just another little thrill to go along with this funny story. I enjoyed myself right along with her as she goes about discovering the best deals and felt my own heart skip when she receives the bills and the overdue notices. It was nice not having to read anything like that with MY name on it - and that's part of the fun too - you can escape the bad stuff and really enjoy the good. It's a lot of fun reading along and wondering if she'll ever learn her lesson. Along with the shopping mania, Becky finds love - in the handsome and smart public relations company owner - Luke Brandon. Right away, you wonder if he's a possible love interest - she doesn't seem that interested at first, but they meet and meet again and you ride right along with the possibility that they just might get together. You get to know her parents, their neighbors, childhood friends, her roommate and a whole cast of characters that build up the story and keep it very interesting. This book is full of relationships that don't get too heavy, but add just the right snap. This book "goes down nice & easy" and I enjoyed it very much. It's nice when you first discover an author for yourself and are immediately drawn into the characters. I'm halfway through the next installment in the "Shopaholic" series and can't wait for more. I definitely give this book BOTH "thumbs up"!

Book Review: Hilarious!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Twenty-five-year-old Rebecca "Becky" Bloomwood appears to be living the absolute perfect life. She lives in a beautiful flat in one of the hippest areas in London, she has many fantastic, glamorous friends who are quite big on the socialite scene, and her closet is absolutely oozing all of the season's must-haves. Unfortunately for Becky, she can't afford one iota of it. Sure, she's a writer at SUCCESSFUL SAVINGS magazine, but the job doesn't pay enough for her to live in the lap of luxury, and the many articles she has written about saving money haven't helped her to learn anything. Hence, she is drowning in debt. However, now she is being chased by the creditors. Visa, Endwich Bank, all demanding large sums of money that she can't afford, so she tries to ignore them. But as time is passing by, it's becoming harder and harder for her to ignore the bill collectors. Her only consolation to escape the madness is to buy herself a little something, but that makes matters worse. Luckily, something Becky actually cares about lands right in her lap, and suddenly her article makes front-page news. This may just be the one thing that changes Becky's life.

Sophie Kinsella is one of my new favorite authors. Becky Bloomwood is absolutely hilarious, and absolutely relateable to all of us out there who find ourselves shopping even when we are out of money. Her quirks and excuses are absolutely fabulous, and will have readers rolling on the floor laughing. A touch of romance makes CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC even more exciting, without overshadowing the main premise of the story. Fans of Helen Fielding's BRIDGET JONES' DIARY series will relish in Becky's story. A must have book for all, whether you're a fan of the chick lit genre or not.

Book Review: CHARMING, CAPTIVATING AND DELIGHTFUL!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have to admit that I found the beginning of this light-hearted little novel to be quite slow and a little boring. Rebecca Bloomwood, the would be heroine of "Confessions of a Shopaholic" by Sophie Kinsella is a shallow, egocentric twenty-five year old who is a journalist for a financial magazine. The job bores her to tears; she literally paraphrases pamphlets that she receives at press conferences for her articles. She lives in a very nice flat thanks to Suze, her wealthy friend who lives off a trust fund. And, she shops~~and shops~~and shops!! Even though Rebecca knows that she is deeply in debt, she continues to spend exorbitant amounts of money on clothes, shoes, make-up and scarves. She even owes her roommate. These are all things that she does not need but she is quite good at rationalizing every purchase.

She receives bills from the bank, from Visa and even from store accounts almost daily and like the ostrich who puts her head in a hole, Rebecca either throws away the envelope or hides them in her drawer while continuing to shop. Making a purchase actually calms her nerves. And then we have her problem telling untruths. She actually puts on a job application that she is fluent in Finnish--of course everything always catches up with her and she is constantly being humiliated. It is at this point in the book that I became hooked! I became enchanted with Miss Bloomwood's escapades, her fantasies, even her relationships. They were all laugh out loud funny!

Finally, Rebecca discovers her soul, her passion her conscience, even her intelligence. And when that happens, she discovers love. I ended up loving this little book; I had a smile on my face throughout the story.

The book Confessions Of A Shopaholic is all about a girl named Rebecca Bloomwood. Becky is a writer for a financial newspaper, and this job bores her out of her mind. She also does not get paid very well at all. She lives in London with her best friend Suze. After all this mayham a story comes up that Becky just can't resist taking and it is actually something she is interested in. This article causes a lot of changes in her life. Are they bad or good? What will really happen to Becky and her glamorous life?

I really enjoyed this book because it always made you want to turn the page to read more and see what exciting thing might hapen next. Becky was a fun character to read about and try to relate to because she really wanted live a glamorous life, but she just didn't have the money to do it. She juggled all kinds of situations and it was always fun to see what problem she might step into. I would recomend this book to any girl that loves to shop and wants to live a glamorous life, or just anyone who wants to read an exciting, fun filled book.
