Book Reviews of Confessions of a Shopaholic (Shopaholic Series)

Book Review: Can't relate
Summary: 1 Stars

I think about this crappy book a lot. This woman is the most despicable character in modern fiction. She lies to herself and others. She justifies stupidity in a glib way. She has a shopping addiction, and in the end everything works out for her. She never deals with her problem. Can you imagine a book about an alcoholic who's spiraling downward and in the end everything miraculously works out great so she can continue drinking every day and night?! Or a fat woman who can't control her eating, but in the end gets a job as a plus size model and a boyfriend who loves fat women, so she can continue overeating and getting fatter and fatter all the time?! This book was the epitome of frustration for me. She never gets control of herself, and this is supposed to be ... "hilarous" as the reviews say? To me it's just very sad and completely implausible. (PS. Yes I realize it's fiction. It's still annoying.)

Book Review: An enjoyable read with lots of humor
Summary: 5 Stars

I would have never picked this book, but it was recommended by a friend. It's considered "chick lit", not normally my style, but I was so glad to have learned about the author Sophie Kinsella as she is wonderful.

A fabulous read that I got through in just a day and found myself laughing aloud. I also found it hard to put it down until I was finished. Lots of relatable situations and other situations that are just down right embarassing and quite laughable.

Becky is a bit shallow while have lots of depth and character at the same time. (if that's possible) She's also a bit flighty, but her instincts and compassion for people make up that that. A likeable character that you find yourself rooting for. She's just plain fun.

Nice, light read and lots of fun. I will definetly be reading more books by this author.

Book Review: This is me only a lot worse - phew!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book was un-put-downable - I became a reading-aholic! It was funny, charming, sweet, and eerily familiar.

I'm a lot more sensible with my money than Becky but I certainly understand where she's coming from, and her daydreaming is so funny cos it's so true eg. 'this chap isnt as nasty as I thought... maybe we'll become friends and I'll get to know his daughter, and through her connections with the TV industry I'll get a job in television and I'll go round there for dinner and help her mum do a salad..' - awesome stuff!

The author is obviously a fan of Helen Fielding who wrote the Bridget Jones books, but it pays off - the girlie English humour is priceless (unlike those Prada sunnies - they have a price tag)

If you like good chick lit and a good giggle, this is the book for you!

Book Review: I don't get it.
Summary: 1 Stars

As I have lately been enjoying the chick lit genre, I decided to give this book a try. It sounded silly, but I figured if Kinsella was able to follow it up with several more Shopaholic books, she must be on to something. I finished this book 2 weeks ago, and I'm still trying to figure out why, exactly, this book is such a hit. I found Becky very hard to relate to. Yes, like many 20something women, I've had credit card issues. But Becky's pathological lying to her family, friends, and herself, wasn't amusing. There were so many times in this book where I realized that a situation was supposed to be funny, but it instead just made me a little bit sick to my stomach. I would have greatly enjoyed the fairy tale ending had it happened to any other character, but I couldn't root for Becky. She didn't deserve it.

Book Review: Confessions of a Shopoholic
Summary: 3 Stars

This book is like a rollercoaster. First it gets way up and exciting, and then it shoots underground and it seems to take forever to get back up above to the top. Most of it is unbelievable. If her credit cards were that overdue they would have done something much more extreme, and Becky would not have been so calm. This is unrealistic, and there are some really boring parts in the plot. I also hated- no, not hated- disliked the way that everything worked out perfectly in the end. If it were any other person they would have been broke and on the streets, but Becky gets the huge hit career and the guy all in one day.
I know this sounds like a bad review, but I can't say that it was so entirely horrible. It could have been better, is all I'm saying. I would still recommend this book, it's just not for me.
