Book Reviews of Confessions of a Shopaholic (Shopaholic Series)Book Review: I know I should laugh but it was depressing Summary: 2 Stars
I can see the author is trying to be cute and funny, but it's not actually funny. I mean, it's funny at first, but then after awhile it starts to feel like a 'madcap comedy about a bumbling addict trying to score some blow, while running into zany predicaments, with unpredictable and hilarious results!' Yeah, not actually funny... she's so out of control with her purchases, and even when she starts to figure it out she doesn't take it seriously.
Good news? It made me take a good hard look at my own finances and see that rationalizations about sales and discounts are just that, rationalizations. Hopefully shopaholic was depressing enough that I might think of her when I shop. So... morality tale instead of chicklit, not exactly what I was looking for. But I guess it works.
Book Review: Sophie Kinsella knows how to do a series! Summary: 5 Stars
I have read all of these books except '& baby' and although I cannot identify with Becky's clothing and shoe addictions, there are still elements that I can identify with. The characters are well developed, sometimes I feel like I could pass her best friend on the streets of London. If they ever made this book into a movie, you would probably have to have the the What Not To Wear gal playing Becky with Cameron Diaz as the best friend. I have recommended this book to several people and have found a few just as determined as I was to get through the entire series. Get them in order, you can pick up bits and pieces that you miss but I think trying to catch up takes away a little bit from the entire Bloomwood experience. If you miss a year or two in her life, it's a lot! Write on Sophie!
Book Review: Not for everyone, but..... Summary: 4 Stars
I'm now pretty much sick and tired of Chick Lit, but for those of you aren't yet: if you're looking for a bit of light reading, try this book. Rebecca, "Becky," Bloomwood is the professed shopaholic, and she is a bloody nutter. She does stupid things, i.e. borrow money from a virtual stranger so that she can buy a scarf, and lie on her resume about speaking Finnish (?!) fluently. That said, she also possesses a certain charm. I laughed out loud at a couple of her escapades. Few people (I hope) are as pathetic with money as her, but we all have our moments, right? Anyway, if you don't think you can empathize with her insanity even a little, don't waste your money on this book. If you can, it's a worthwhile read. (If you can but are broke, borrow it from a friend or the library.)
Book Review: Not Kinsella's best Summary: 1 Stars
I've read Sophie Kinsella's other books - not in the shopaholic series... And I LOVE them...
But I've got to say I'm really disappointed with this one - I'm with Shana from NY - and in the minority of reviewers. I find Becky despicable. I consider myself a shopaholic - but I could not stand this main character. All the lies and irresponsibility - she's self-centered and stupid... Somehow manages to know nothing about finance (nevermind her own) - despite working in the business - Even a slug could absorb more information. I don't know why two of Britain's richest bachelors would be interested in her - she's shallow and uninteresting. I'm 3/4 through the book and will struggle to finish it. But I'm secretly hoping something awful happens to her to put me out of my misery.
Book Review: I Had Really High Hopes... Summary: 3 Stars
Knowing how hugely popular this series of books are and seeing the trailer for the movie, I was really excited to dive into this story. However, I began to cringe after the first couple of chapters. I was unable to connect to the main character, Rebecca. I don't understand that whole shopping thing, and I don't know the difference between Versace and LouisVitton. I kept thinking to myself, "How is it possible for someone to be so naive and out of control?" I forced myself to finish the book, and I have to say that it does get better after the climax of all her problems. The chemistry between her and her intended through the novel is also intriguing, but it left me really wanting more. Although it bothers me immensely, I will not be reading other books from the Shopaholic series.
