Book Reviews of Coraline

Book Review: A disturbing, delicious and wonderful story!
Summary: 5 Stars

What a disturbing, delicious and wonderful story! This is the type of book I'd have devoured as a little girl -- the type of book that would have kept me awake half the night listening for "rustling, scratchy and dry" voices that makes one think of "some kind of enormous dead insect". However, it is also the type of book I'd have read over and over and over again and would still proudly own as an adult -- page-worn and abused from multiple readings. It is beautifully written and just as the imagination starts to explode with some seriously frightening images, Gaiman inserts a bit of droll wit that has you laughing at the absurdity of it all. I highly recommend that you read this book aloud to your children -- preferably during the night of a full moon.

Book Review: The truth about the book " Coraline"
Summary: 4 Stars

It's Coraline, not Caroline. That's Coraline's problem. no one gets her name right. It's boring glum in her old flat apartment. You'd think crazy Mr. Bobo who is raising a mice circus would keep her busy since her parents have no time for her. One day Coraline finds a door to a world almost congruent to her own. Every thing is alike from her Dad's office to her great grandma's junk packed room, When a women with paper white skin and button eyes in this world seems to "love" Coraline. So maybe if this women is crazy enough to knit buttons in her head, she's crazy enough to try and win Coraline's love by smashing the whole world together. Worse, she takes her anger of failing outon her right hand. Will Coraline escape while her blood still flows?

Book Review: Loved Coraline by Neil Gaiman!
Summary: 5 Stars

Coraline was a quick read. I picked it up after dinner and read it within a couple of hours. Written for children, probably middle school kids, I feel that adults too will enjoy this well written story.

Neil Gaiman has a wonderful talent for storytelling. From the very first page to the last page I was lost in the book. It was my first Neil Gaiman book but it won't be my last. If you're looking for a creepy short story this book is the one to read. It's not scary in the blood and gore manner but it's scary in the psychological way. Not for younger kids but definitely for middle school kids and adults!

I enjoyed his book and look forward to reading more of his work.

Book Review: OK But Not A Classic
Summary: 3 Stars

I'm having trouble summing up what was wrong with this book, but I think it seemed to move too rapidly and not enough time was spent lingering over some of the truly deliciously wicked parts of the story. Coraline's bravery and the creepy fact of this mirror-image world on the other side of a fake door in her house give the right sort of building materials for a great tale, it's just that Mr. Gaiman didn't seem to follow through on the promise this dark little book had at its start. I really did love the cover design for Coraline, and the idea of this sinister pseudo-world lurking so close to our realm is a neat idea. I don't regret reading Coraline, but it wasn't everything I hoped it would be.

Book Review: Superb -- A Modern Alice in Wonderland
Summary: 5 Stars

I can't add much more to the reviews already posted. I really enjoyed this novella from Gaiman, one of the best fantasists working today.

CORALINE is a lovely children's story with the same surreal whimsy that Lewis Carroll presented in ALICE IN WONDERLAND. The story about a young girl's magical adventures is as wonderfully written tale that authentically captures the magic of childhood. This story has some dark and gruesome moments, but is fine for older children. It is also quite suitable for adult readers.

I enjoy Gaiman, and suggest this book and NEVERWHERE as the best introductions to his work (in addition to his short stories).
