Book Reviews of CoralineBook Review: A twist on normal fantasy novels Summary: 4 Stars
All of my friends said "Do not read this book. It's really scary." Naturally, when someone says that it makes you want to read the book even more, so I read it. It was a fairly easy read, and interesting as well. I didn't think it was scary at all though. I would definitely not call it horror, it was a fantasy book. The story line was entertaining and action packed. The characters were very well thought up and the descriptions of them precise. The end was wrapped up very nicely, and I think even a hint of comedy shone through. Absolutely a great book. Even if you do think it is scary, it is not gory. I reccomend it for anybody wanting a change from normal fantasy books.
Book Review: Couldn't put it down...! Summary: 5 Stars
When I saw the NY Times blurb on the paperback cover saying what a scary story this was, I was concerned about handing it over to my 9-year-old granddaughter to read alone... so I decided to read it first. And I couldn't put it down! When my granddaughter came over that weekend, we started reading it aloud together. I had to tell her at 11:30 p.m. that we needed to finish it the following week, because my voice was getting tired. We are both captivated by this dark, imaginative world that explores family ties, loneliness, love, good, evil, loyalty and bravery. And for a girl who insists she doesn't like to read, my granddaughter can't wait to finish this book!
Book Review: Excellent quick read Summary: 5 Stars
Coraline is the first book I have read by Neil Gaiman, and I was not disappointed. Though the book is written for a young adult audience, it's also well suited to older readers - thought it is an awfully quick read. I really enjoyed the imagery the book summons up, the descriptions of scenery in the "other mothers" house and grounds was particularly good. Coraline is a creepy story that brings to mind the things you had nightmares of as a child, but, as with any good fairy tale, good triumphs over evil in the end and one is able to put those nightmares to rest. I highly recommend this book to readers of all ages.
Book Review: Scary and Twisted Summary: 5 Stars
This book was probably one of the scariest stories I have ever read. It was creepy in a way that made me remember why I used to be afraid of the dark and of closed doors. As for the writing style, the imagery Neil Gaiman uses in his stories gives just the right amount of flavor and atmosphere to Coraline without over burdening the reader with unnecessary details. Seeing as how frightening this book truly is, I don't recommend this book to young kids. There's no gore in it, that's not why. It's so psychological that it might be scarier to them than if there was actually gore in it. 5/5 stars for Coraline!
Book Review: Deliciously creepy! Summary: 4 Stars
Coraline's parents are too busy to give her the attention she craves and no one can seem to figure out how to pronounce her name correctly. While exploring one day, she finds a secret door that leads into a parallel universe where her "other parents" dote on her and everyone says her name properly. At first, she enjoys her "other home," but when she is ready to return to her normal life, she realizes that her "other mother" has other plans. Coraline must find a way to be brave and outsmart the evil "other mother" in order to find her way home.
Deliciously creepy!
