Book Reviews of Cost: A Novel

Book Review: gratuitous unnecessary political commentary
Summary: 1 Stars

If you want to learn about heroin addiction copy the resouces listed in Robinson's acknowledgements, then read those. If you want to read about how awful George W. Bush is read the New York Times, or listen to NPR, or watch NBC TV. It's impossible to read any current novel, or watch any movie without the writer, director or editor injecting his/her negative opinion about GW Bush. Someone please explain to me how the author's opinion about Bush has anything to do with the narrative of this novel.

Book Review: Wrenching look at addiction
Summary: 5 Stars

Robinson, a wonderful writer, has given us a wrenching look at the complexities of addicton.......the horrors for the addict and for everyone who is drawn into his world. She spares the reader none of the grim details as the family tries desperately to find answers and solutions....when there really are none.

The author is a master of character development, in this book and in all her other novels and stories. Her writing is a model for what good fiction should, and can, be.

Book Review: Pretentious
Summary: 2 Stars

I started this book last night and got through about 16 pages before stopping in disgust. In the first 14 pages the author uses these words: obdurate, impecuniousness, crepuscular and aquiline. I'm fairly literate and I read voraciously, but those were new ones for me. Sure, the reader can pretty much discern the meaning of the words from their context, but still..... Perhaps the story is one of the greatest ever. I'll never know and that's OK with me.

Book Review: Brilliant!
Summary: 5 Stars

My first experience with Roxana Robinson and I was smitten! This family saga is filled with emotion. Each character is so vividly developed and the reader cannot help but care deeply about each of the members, as they struggle to come together to face a wrenching situation. It depicts drug addiction in the most graphic way and the suffering it brings to the son, who is the victim and to the family members who love him. Powerful, touching, luminous!

Book Review: Harrowing and brilliant
Summary: 5 Stars

What begins as fascinating domestic drama erupts into a wrenching story about three generations of a family grappling with one son's addiction to heroin. Their transformation is stunningly detailed and rich in character--and the book is exquisite. It kept me up until the wee hours of the morning reading.

Cost richly deserves all the accolades it's been getting--and more.
