Book Review: Not cool...
Summary: 2 Stars
Sometimes I teach art classes and survey students about what they would like to learn, then I get as much material as I can find at the libraries and on the web until I am an expert on that medium. If a book is especially well-written or useful I'll buy it. This book was discovered in my research and there were a few unique projects while most were familiar and often-used techniques. The photos are clear and useful. However on page 84 there is a 2-page photo spread that depicts eight beaded pieces that some students were inspired by and wanted to make. Of those eight pieces only two were actually described in the following pages. I call that a bait & switch. This is tacky for the author to do and should have been caught by the editor. At the end of that series of pages the author writes "let your imagination inspire you." Ok. That is obvious to any artist/crafter. However, if you show a piece centered on the page as you do on page 86 then describe the pattern. Otherwise don't show it.
I give 2 stars only because the book has limited value for a novice -or someone who wants to find a copy at the library to see if there is a technique that is new to them. If there is a photo of a piece then always give the project details. Without that gaff I would have given 3 stars. There are many great books, dvds and youtube videos on basic wire techniques.
