Book Reviews of Cry to HeavenBook Review: An elegantly beautiful and emotional book. Summary: 5 Stars
I have just finished reading Cry To Heaven and I love it! This is my favorite book! As soon as I read the first page I was immediately enthralled and couldn't put it down. The research that was done for this was absolutely amazing. Anne Rice was so detailed and descriptive I truly felt as if I was really there. I felt such a connection with the main character, I felt all the emotions he felt while reading the book. There were parts in the book that made me weep uncontrolably, and other times I was so tense with anticipation it felt as if I had stuck my finger in an electirc socket. I cannot even begin to describe the beauty of this book. I read this book as if in a trance and could not think of anything else. Even now as I write this I sigh and smile with fondness. There are images that have been imprinted in my mind that will last me a lifetime. I encourage anyone who wants to feel any sense of passion from a story, to get this book and treasure it always as I certainly will.
Book Review: a beautiful and emotional book Summary: 5 Stars
I never cared much for Anne Rice's vampire novels, and only recently discovered her witches books. So when someone recommended this book to me, I didn't think I would get it. Then I found it again on a listmania list, and decided to check it out, and then ordered it.
Castrati have long held my fascination, and I have often wondered what they sounded like, how their lives were. This book feels so natural, so well researched, that I feel like I have been allowed a step back in time, and a visit to one of the great Castrati.
And yes, the main character is bisexual, and yes, there is sexuality in this book, but if you let that keep you from reading this book, you miss out on so much more. It is so well written, and the main character grabs hold of your heart and does not let it go at the end of the book.
So, for any other non-Anne Rice lovers like me: go read this book. It is so wonderful, and I am veryhappy I gave it a chance.
Book Review: boring Summary: 2 Stars
I am sorry, but I can't stand this book. The premise was intriguing and Anne is definately the one author who can pull it off, which is why the dullness of this book is such a disappointment. She piles details upon details, heaps on the prose, and drags the whole tale out. I was actually skipping ahead to see how it ends and if it was worth the effort to finish. Very slow to warm up to in the biginning, then a sagging dragging middle and finally a pretty good end. Sad, poetic, even haunting at times? Yes. Her prose is not pulp fiction, it is literary and lovely. But less is more! And this book could have been IMHO 10 times better if a few dozen pages were shaved off, a few scenes shortened or cut, and a few details glossed over or omitted altogether.I started this one on vaction--maybe the atmosphere was too light for such a zaftig book? Or maybe I am just making excuses for this latest effort by Rice? She's seen better days and so have I!
Book Review: SOME OF RICE'S BEST WORK Summary: 5 Stars
This is wonderfully written book, touching a period and aspect of history seldom mentioned or noted. Rice's touching portrayal of the Castrati is done in an honest and understanding manner. She has done a wonderul job with her research. There is much to learn from this work. There were events and actions in our history that my make us uncomfortable, but they were real, and we should know of them, if for no other reason, to prevent them from happening again. As a side note, I absolutely broke down and laughed at some of the reviewers who were, if not homophobic, then close to it, rave on and on about Rice's vampire epics, then write lines of disgust in reference to the "unnatural sexual act" discussed in this book. Like sucking blood out of a persons neck is "natural. Folks, give it a break. This is a story based on historical fact..give is a rest.
I do hope we get more stuff from Rice of this quality. Thank you Ms Rice.
Book Review: Wonderful Tale with Historical Context Summary: 5 Stars
I just finished this book a week ago and have thought about picking it up and reading it again already. A classic Rice work, her writing is so detailed you would think see wrote the book while watching all the events in the lives of the main characters Guido and Tonio unfold.
Provocatively accurate (I am sure) she details the "behind closed doors" activities of the famous Castrati of the 17th - 19th centuries. Detailing the loves, misgivings and deeds of each and how they interlace with one another. The Italian Opera with all its glorious voices, preparation and people add to the fascination behind the story.
The richly detailed descriptions of Venice, Rome and Naples allow the reader to visualize the scenery on their mind. The reader also comes to understand Tonio and slow, time-biding quest for revenge.
This is a wonderful piece of literature and as usual Rice doesn't disappoint.
