Book Reviews of Cry to HeavenBook Review: Takes a lot to hold your attention. Summary: 3 Stars
Until now I thought I'd found my all-time favourite author......I've been reading Anne Rice's Vampire chronicles and thought this would be equally satisfying but I was rather disappointed that the book was unable to hold my attention at several points. It took me nearly a month to finish reading it compared to my usual 3 day read with Anne Rice's vampire novels. You can tell she's done a very good research (as usual) on eighteenth century castrati but I found the story lacking Anne's usual mystic touch of the dark. Tonio Treschi's sexuality is very muddled, some of his erotic scenes gave my stomache a wierd churning sensation. A man together with another man is not natural! And then to be able to go back to sharing his bed with another woman before settling for both???!!!All in all a good before bed read, but other than that you need to be really bored to pick up this book!
Book Review: A predictable yet engrossing read Summary: 4 Stars
Anne Rice fans will find much that is familiar in "Cry to Heaven", although unlike her other popular novels, there is no element of the supernatural present here. This is a book that will transport the reader back to 18th century Italy, into a world of politics, intrigue, corruption, and most of all, music. Rice's writing is as full and rich as always, with detailed settings and fully realized characters. The novel is well-researched, I learned much about the time period that I didn't know before. The flaw? I found most of the major plot twists to be extremely predictable. I won't give anything away, but every time something shocking happened, I had already guessed what was to come at least a chapter before. Maybe I've just read too many books. Regardless, I would still recommend this book to any Anne Rice fan.
Book Review: Sad, Beautiful, Sensuous and Shocking Summary: 5 Stars
Cry to Heaven has to be my favorite novel since the day I finished reading its first chapter. Rice fulfilled all of my outlandish fantasies my meager imagination couldn't comply. When you read this saga you just move through time with it, and you never know where she's going to take you next. Events in this novel are so suspenseful, you know it is going to happen but you strictly deny it. At a point through this novel, I threw the book on the floor and chanted "oh my God" over and over again in pure shock. Then I quickly picked it up again read some more and threw it back on the floor. I read this book over and over again and I still haven't gotten tired of it. Its not for everybody, but if you want to read something by someone who's not afraid to go well beyond the norm, then Ann Rice is for you.
Book Review: Poor writing Summary: 1 Stars
After reading Anne Rice "Beauty" series and then trying to switch to her "mainline" novels, I was dissapointed to find that the poor writing style that I found in "Beauty" was also found in the rest of her novels. I thought the stilted, mundane, elemenatary sytle of Beauty was unique to erotica and was a result of trying to make hardcore sex fascinating, but I found the same pendantic, non-literary style to be found in the rest of her novels. Anne Rice is all plot and not style. She approaches fascinating and erotic subjects with pedantic and stilted phrasing. ... I keep waiting for the literary style that the promos, books sales, and movies promise. It aint's there. Basicallly, Anne Rice is soft porn with no literary style. Any good romance writer could do as well. Rice just sucks people in with gore.
Book Review: My favorite book ever Summary: 5 Stars
I have read this 3 times now. And each time, I discover things I had not noticed before and I also discover that I love it more with each reading. This novel is at times darkly depressing but I loooove novels like that. Because if somthing can make me feel depressed after reading it, then it has accomplished somthing. I beleive it is pretty difficult to write somting dramatic, gut wrenching. And Anne succeeds. This is writing at its finest and most beautiful.
To some the subject matter of eunichs may not seem interesting, but it takes you into a whole other world that really did exist although you find it difficult to comprehend. I think one main reason I love this book is how she portrays the main characters. You cant help falling in love with their flaws and imperfections. Truly a great read.
