Book Review: Danger in the Shadows

Thirty-one year-old Sara Walsh has been living under the constant watch of oppressive FBI security for twenty-five years of her life. Sara and her twin sister Kim were abducted at the age of six, and although the book never comes out and states it, it's implied that they were horribly abused, which resulted in Kim's death. Of course, she wasn't Sara Walsh then; she was Sara Richman. The last name change, the constant moves, the inability to hang on to any relationships, are Sara's world, for one of the kidnappers is still out there, is still obsessed with Sara, still wants her, only her. However, one disastrous elevator ride is about to change her world. Sara meets Adam Black, a former pro-football player who's well-known to the public. But Sara knows that if she begins dating a public figure like Adam, both of their lives will be in danger.
Danger in the Shadows was awarded the highest award for a romance novel in America, the RITA award, for a reason. Henderson makes Sara, Adam, and Sara's brother and head of security, Dave, real and believable characters, with multiple sides to their personalities. Their struggles are realistic, and some of Sara's nightmares and memories are appropriately disturbing. The story grabs hold of the reader's interest and, through rich detail and intricate plotting, never lets go. The affection and protective feelings that Sara and Dave share for each other brings to mind the reader's own familial relationships, for they are in stark contrast to Sara's relationship with her ambassador father. As Sara and Adam debate over their future, the reader can feel Sara's pain as she is torn between what she believes is her duty to do in order to protect those she loves, and what she truly wants, what she truly needs.
Sara's pain, in fact, is the only issue with the story. Sara's unselfishness reaches the point where it becomes selfishness and, in one point, is no longer relatable to readers. But nevertheless, the reader is never tempted to stop reading, for the story is never boring. It has scenes that are comical and satirical, scenes that make one's heart pound, touching romantic scenes, and a surprise twist for an ending- just when the reader believes the danger in the shadows is gone, it reappears like never before. The love Sara and Adam share for one another can only be described is true, devoted, unconditional love. Also, readers will relate spiritual journeys of the main characters. Sara finally comes to terms with her past only when she realizes she has to let go of what happened, as she hears God telling her, "Kim died. Are you going to carry that guilt all your life? It wasn't your decision."
Danger in the Shadows was published first in 2000, and once again in 2005, by Tyndale House Publishers.
Oh, and by the way, Danger in the Shadows is the prequel book to another of Dee Henderson's series, the O'Malley Series, which I also highly recommend.
