Book Reviews of D'Aulaires' Book of Greek MythsBook Review: Not just for kids! Summary: 5 Stars
We recently received our D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths. Needless to say, the illustrations are stunning. The content is a bit "deep" for a young child. I was hoping for an easy introduction to Greek Myths for a 7yo. While interesting and VERY educational, this is pretty in depth. That is a good thing, in that we will be using this book for many years to come! I know that I certainly learned much I had forgotten or didn't know! Will make a wonderful reference book for the older child. It builds on each chapter, branching out with more in depth information so you will learn where each Greek character fits into the whole scheme. This is an excellent book, not my favorite D'Aulaire book however. It is, after all, a D'Aulaire.. you can't go wrong!
Book Review: First Greek Mythology Book I Ever Owned Summary: 5 Stars
From the first time my mother sat me in her lap and read me about Greek mythology, I was hooked. Knights and dragons hadn't piqued my interest in the least, but the radiant Greek gods, deathless and powerful beyond comprehension, touched something within my imagination that lives to this day. D'Aulaires Book of Greek Myths was the first book my mother ever bought me and I still have the inscribed, worn edition as one of the prized treasures of my youth.
To this day, I believe man has the spark of Divine Nature within him. Unlike the Norse gods and the gods from other mythologies, there is no death and no end to glory.
This should be in every child's library. Like the gods it tells of, the beauty within its pages will never die.
Book Review: Learning without trying Summary: 5 Stars
My copy of this book is tattered and more than 20 years old -- I read it dozens of times as a child, traced the pictures, and generally worshipped this book, especially the colorful, loving art. When I got older, I learned I had actually ingested many of the tales and characters without even trying to, and the knowledge has been useful throughout my life. For people who say this book is too simplistic, or don't like the pictures, I think they were just looking for something like Bullfinch's -- which I find dry. And for the one reviewer who thought it was too complicated for kids as well as adults, well, I'm not sure what to say. I read it at the age of 7, and completely understood it. When I have children, this is the first book I'm getting them!
Book Review: The Beginning of an obsession Summary: 5 Stars
When i was 7 years old after Disney's Hercules came out, my father read this book to my brother, sister, and me. Ever since then, i've been in love with greek mythlogy. I finally got my own copy of this about a year ago, and it's still as magical as i remembered. Sure, the stories are watered down a little, but they tell the myths so that in a way that you can imagine being there. Every time we studied mythology in school, i was ahead of the class because of this book. And with modern adaptations on Greek Myths coming out (Percy Jackson and others), i find it important to go back to a source where you can find out where these stories really come from. I love this book and i'm happy to have a copy of it at last.
Book Review: GREAT BOOK Summary: 5 Stars
This book is so great. It is so beautiful. It has famous myths like The Quest for the Golden Fleece, and famous gods like Athena, and famous heroes like Heracles. I read this book and now I bring it everywhere I go. If you want to learn about Greek Mythology, you should buy this book. It tells about all the gods and goddesses, too. My favorite part is the picture of the birth of Athena. This book is for all ages. I am 7 and I love it. It gives you information that is so interesting that you will love it, too. I think this is a great book to draw from. You should read about Gaea and Uranus first, so you understand the topic. I recommend this book to everyone in the world!!!
