Book Reviews of D'Aulaires' Book of Greek MythsBook Review: Great book for art teachers! Summary: 5 Stars
When my middle school art students were studying the art of Ancient Greece, this book was their favorite resource! Reading the stories of the Greek myths gave them a much better understanding of and appreciation for Greek art and architecture, as so much of the art of Ancient Greece was based on mythology! The kids found the stories entertaining, well-written and within their reading level. They illustrated scenes from their favorite stories and did a variety of other art projects related to Greek mythology. I'd highly recommend this book to other art teachers, especially to those teachers who are interested in incorporating reading and writing across the curriculum.
Book Review: Wow! Such a wonderful way to present Greek Mythology. Summary: 5 Stars
I first became enthralled with Greek Mythology when I was 6 years old, after hearing my uncle tell me about it.
I received this book as a present in 1995 during my second grade, and read it through and through multiple times...It was left to dust on my bookshelf for years until the summer after I finished 9th grade. I was required to read a collection of greek myths for my incoming sophomore Honors Humanities class. I knew I had a great book already, and while I had fun reading this book, my friends labored through pictureless novels of 400 pages+. And yet I got the highest grade on our quiz on our reading during the first day of school. :) great read~
Book Review: Loved as a child and now purchasing for my 8 year old Summary: 5 Stars
I loved this book as a child. Like many of the other reviewers, I read it day after day until I knew every Greek God, character and story. Today I went to half price books to find a used copy or something similar and could not find anything close. I was so happy to find it on Amazon. I will love reading these stories with my eight year old son.
The things that I love about this book are that it's easy to read but very thorough. The illustrations add a lot to the understanding of the stories or descriptions and there are plenty in this book for kids who still aren't 100% into all text books. I can't wait to get this!
Book Review: Beautiful illustrations... Summary: 4 Stars
But the text is lacking. I found it dry and facile at times. There were few explanations for why the gods would hate each other so much, other than the idea that they had to control the earth or the land in some way. This sets the basis for hierarchical systems of thought found in modern-day Greek society, long before the domination of the female gender took full force (around that time there was still a fair amount of female influence, archeological sources tell us) and ideates that we all need to look forward to future wars as a way of life. This is a nice, large volume, though. You'll like the drawings.
Book Review: Fabulous for kids and and their parents Summary: 5 Stars
This book is fabulous for all parents of pre-schoolers and elementary school age kids. My son is three and has already spent hours pondering Pandora. Imagine my delight when, after I read him the story of Icarus, he asked over and over: "But why, mommy, why did Icarus fall?" Moreover, his cousins who are five and seven have read the entire book and loved it. The pictures stir their imaginations and generate interest in the stories. There are many lovely images and the stories are told in a simple, accessible style. This is a fabulous children's introduction to the Greek myths and enjoyable for parents too.
