Book Reviews of D'Aulaires' Book of Greek MythsBook Review: So good I refused to return it to the library . . . Summary: 5 Stars
This is the one and only book I ever refused to return to the library. I was about five when I first found it, and I was so enthralled by the pictures and the stories that I just could not bring myself to return it. Even at that tender age I already had a long history as a library scofflaw when it came to returning books, but I always gave in eventually. Finally my mom had to pay the library for it, and that book has a place of honor on my bookshelf today, thirty years later. With over twelve nieces and nephews, I make sure each one has their own copy. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
Book Review: Great for all ages Summary: 5 Stars
I remember the summer I discovered this book over 30 years ago as a 10 year old. I was enchanted by the stories and the gorgeous illustrations, and after reading this book, I read D'Aulaire's "Norse Myths." I embarked on my own odyssey of reading most of the mythology books in our local library.
I recently finished reading "Greek Myths" aloud to my 7 and 9-year-old sons, and they loved it. My 9-year-old often borrowed the book and read ahead to himself, but he also stayed around to listen as I read the same selections to my 7 year old. We're now working our way through "Norse Myths."
Book Review: Infomrative but dull. Summary: 3 Stars
We bought this book as a resource for a young adult novel which makes frequent references to greek myths, gods and goddesses. The good news is that it's comprehensive; whenever we turned to it, it always had the information we were seeking. But the stories are all told with dry monotony. We learn who was married to whom, their parentage and progeny but it all leaves you with the kind of enthusiasm you might feel while leafing through the yellow pages. These are BIG stories about big themes - stories that have been with us for centuries. Surely they can be conveyed with a little more verve.
Book Review: average Summary: 3 Stars
The Positive: At a decent, fifth-grade + level, the book covers NUMEROUS "myths", unlike books which only touch on a few. I appreciated that. Negative: The drawings/artwork is amateur and dull, which makes the stories less memorable. Good illustrations are important to me. In light of new evidence that the "Gods" may be ancient astronauts with high technology, I would like an updated version that presented the "myths" more as an effort by less technological people trying to explain these high tech astronauts who were jerking everyone around. The "myths" are likely NOT made up stories.
Book Review: One of the greatest memories of my childhood Summary: 5 Stars
This book was one of the greatest memories of my childhood. I was in kindergarden and my older brother brought it home from the elementary school library, we devoured every picture and every word. Between my brother and I we checked out and re-checked out this book hundreds of times. I loved it so much that we both bought copies of it when we grew up. I am 41 now and read it to my son, he loves it too. This book was originally published in the early sixties, so it's old but wonderful. The author also did a very similar book on Norse Mythology that is equally great...I own that as well.
