Book Reviews of D'Aulaires' Book of Greek MythsBook Review: As enchanting as ever Summary: 5 Stars
I'm 30 now, and my nephew is 10. He left his D'Aulaires' book on my couch on a recent visit with the family, and I sat down and read it from cover to cover, much as I used to when I was 10. It was like finding an old friend, the ancient stories, the glorious illustrations that used to haunt me like dreams, the world it evoked. What a wonderful, wonderful piece of childhood to suddenly stumble on. The next time on Amazon, I ordered a copy, and now it sits next to my well worn copy of Lytton' Strachey's biography of Queen Victoria. I figure legends belong together.
Book Review: A classic! Summary: 4 Stars
My family's copy of this book is dog-eared and lacking a back cover. I think it's safe to say that it has not sat quietly on a shelf and collected dust! My children have all loved these stories and I think we may be investing in a new copy shortly, as I have one more up and coming reader. I loved these myths when I was a child too, and I can still recall being just a bit scared of some of the pencil drawings. I'd give Greek Myths five stars, if the illustrations were more enchanting, but all the same it is a wonderful book with close to 200 pages of well told tales.
Book Review: I love this book. Summary: 5 Stars
My parents bought me this book when I was a young child. I read the stories repeatedly and remember drawing many pictures incorporating the gods and heroes from the book. I told the myths to my cousins, and every time I would see them thereafter they begged me to tell them more stories. Now as a 27 year old academic who reads rather dry research-based literature on mythology that would bore most people to tears, I still love this book and it remains on my bookshelf, worn and with its cover falling off. I would recommend this book to anyone, regardless of age.
Book Review: My first Greek Myth primer Summary: 5 Stars
Glad I bought this book. The D'Aulaires also wrote one on Norse Myths (which I also bought) that sparked my interest as a child to read further into mythology. These types of stories used to fascinate me so much... like a whole other world from a whole other time. They still do, actually. The pictures were stylistic and vibrant. Although I have grown to understand that mythology is much more complex as an adult, this was still one of those oversized books that I, as a child, could sink into with just me and myself in a quiet corner of the library.
Book Review: One of two books I'll be using for Greek myths Summary: 5 Stars
I read four books of Greek myths to decide which one to use for my 7-year-olds. This book contains a much greater number of myths than most and the illustrations help to hold interest. The stories are detailed without being too detailed for children. I appreciated their use of language - it didn't feel dumbed down, and still retained an ancient feel. It can be used as a great read-aloud or given to a child to read on their own (I'd say 3rd grade at least). We'll be using this book along with Classic Myths to Read Aloud by William Russell.
