Book Reviews of Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man: A Novel

Book Review: A great Flagg Book
Summary: 3 Stars

I love anything that Fannie Flagg puts her name on, whether it's a book, article, tv show, or movie. There is something about her southern charm that is freshly familiar and takes me back to my Grandma's house as a child.

It's no secret to anyone in my family that Fried Green Tomatoes is my favorite Fiction Book of all time. I read it for the first time about 10 years ago, and having been reading it once a year since then. Up until recently though that was the only Flagg book I've ever read. So this Christmas I picked up Red Bird Christmas and loved it. So I decided to read all of Flagg's books, starting with the first one and continuing until the most recent.

Daisy Fay... is the first book Flagg wrote, and you in some parts you can tell. Having read some of the more recent books of her's I can see how she has refined her craft of story telling. But with that said this is truly an excellent book. The characters are rich and deep. I immediately liked Daisy Fay from the first page, and she grew up in the book I continued to like her and even root for her. The other characters in the story are all interesting, I especially like the way Flagg portrays the two main men in Daisy Fay's life, her Dad and his best friend. They are both tragic characters that I found to be sad but likable.

The book was well written, but for me (and I'm just speaking for me) there are a few things I wish Flagg had done differently. For starters the book is written like a diary which is very effective for getting into the mind of Daisy Fay, but you are left to the opinions of Daisy for the other characters. I wish Flagg have given us some third person information about these other rich characters that fill this story. At first I didn't like the diary layout of the book, but I got used to and rather enjoyed it at the end.

I also wish Flagg left more info for the end, I was left with a lot of questions at the end that left me wanting more. When I was done with the book I didn't have a contentment of a well written book, but instead a lot of questions that I know won't get answered.

Overall an Excellent book, but a few drawbacks. I'm glad I read it, and I wish Flagg would write a sequel to show what ever happened to Daisy Fay Harper.

Summary of Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man: A Novel

In Fannie Flagg?s high-spirited first novel, we meet Daisy Fay Harper in the spring of 1952, where she?s ?not doing much except sitting around waiting for the sixth grade.? When she leaves Shell Beach, Mississippi, in September 1959, she is packed up and ready for the Miss America Pageant, vowing ?I won?t come back until I?m somebody.? But in our hearts she already is.

Sassy and irreverent from the get-go, Daisy Fay takes us on a rollicking journey through her formative years on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. There, at The End of the Road of the South, the family malt shop freezer holds unspeakable things, society maven Mrs. Dot hosts Junior Debutante meetings and shares inspired thoughts for the week (such as ?sincerity is as valuable as radium?), and Daisy Fay?s Daddy hatches a quick-cash scheme that involves resurrecting his daughter from the dead in a carefully orchestrated miracle. Along the way, Daisy Fay does a lot of growing up, emerging as one of the most hilarious, appealing, and prized characters in modern fiction.
