Book Reviews of Dark Harbor (Stone Barrington)

Book Review: At least it reads quickly
Summary: 3 Stars

I was a big fan of Stuart Woods, back when he wrote Chiefs. Some of his later books are good too, containing references to Chandler and Cain and cute plot twists that work, make sense, and are fun. Unfortunately, he seems to have gotten to the point where he feels the need to churn books out, whether he has an idea or not, whether he has a plot or not, whether his new characters are interesting or not, whether there's any mystery or not...

So this time around, our hero, Stone Barrington (the ex-cop turned jack-of-all-trades lawyer for a highly-priced New York law firm) is informed that a long-lost cousin has passed away. Though Barrington's name sounds pretentious, his father was actually a cabinet-maker, and decidedly middle-class. His mother's family essentially disowned her, so Barrington had little contact with his relatives on that side of the family. This cousin is one of those relatives, and for whatever reason he's left his house on a tony island off the coast of Maine, the island's village-port being named Dark Harbor, hence the title of the book. The cousin apparently killed his wife and daughter, and then committed suicide, and now Stone's inherited his house (there's a jealous brother who thinks it should have been his) and Stone of course is suspicious of the circumstances of the murder/suicide, thinking it likely just a murder.

This is one of Woods's lesser works, so to speak. There are plot twists that don't make much sense, people act in ways that are pretty stupid, and the killer ought to be obvious from the start of the book. Woods does retain his skill with a plot, pushing it along relentlessly, so that you don't waste much time on the story. That's good, because there isn't much of one. I suppose you could do worse, in terms of a book for the beach, but you could also do much better.

Summary of Dark Harbor (Stone Barrington)

Stuart Woods's newest bestseller, Dark Harbor, brings us the perfect mix of sexy intrigue and swift suspense that have earned him legions of fans over the years. In this latest thriller, Stone enters the picturesque town Dark Harbor off the coast of Maine, where the shocking deaths of three people have cast a long shadow over this island haven-a locale as mysterious as it is exclusive.

Stone Barrington hasn't heard from his cousin, Dick Stone, in years-though he has fond memories of a teenage summer spent at his house in Maine. Then, Lance Cabot of the CIA interrupts an otherwise pleasant meal at Elaine's with news of Dick's death-apparently by his own hands. It seems that Dick Stone, a quiet family man who doubled as a CIA agent, methodically executed his wife, daughter, and then himself-or did he? What would cause a loving father and husband to murder his family as they slept? Before his death, Dick had appointed Stone executor of his will, giving him full control of the disposition of a sizable family estate. Was Dick preparing for his suicide, or forewarning Stone of his murder?

With the help of his ex-partner, Dino, and his friend Holly Barker, Stone must settle the estate and piece together the elusive facts of his cousin's life and death as a CIA operative. At every step Stone knows he is being watched by Dick's family-and one of them just may be a killer.
