Book Review: Not the best book in the series
Summary: 3 Stars
I have been reading this series since "Catering to Nobody" and for the most part have found them enjoyable. However, it seems with the past few books, the author has either changed editors, or there is someone else possibly ghostwriting for Ms. Davidson. As other readers have said, there are some big continuity errors from previous books and the over use of exclamation points really did detract from the story. I also felt that the book was a little long for this type of mystery, meant to be more on the light/cozy side. Too much of the book was taken up with unnecesary characters and their subplots that did nothing to move the story/mystery forward.
I am also a little confused about Goldy's age. When I started reading "Catering to Noboby", Goldy was in her early thirties and Arch was about 11. Now, 14 books later, Arch is fifteen, but Goldy is still referring to herself as in her early thirties. Even if she was just 31 in the first book, and if 4 years have truly passed, as indicated by Arch, Goldy would be more in her mid-thirties, at 35 ot 36. If she is truly in her early thirties, then she must have had Arch at fifteen or sixteen. This is a pet peeve of mine in series - the main character never seems to age, even though all the other characters do.
I do plan on reading the next book in the series, but if some of these continuity errors and grammar problems are not corrected, I may be done with the series for good.
Summary of Dark Tort (Goldy Culinary Mysteries, Book 13)
Caterer Goldy Schulz's lucrative new gig, preparing breakfasts and conference room snacks for a local law firm, is time-consuming, but she's enjoying it . . . until the night she arrives to find Dusty, the firm's paralegal, dead. The deceased also happened to be Goldy's friend and neighbor, and now Dusty's grieving mother is begging Goldy to find out who murdered her daughter.
Just because the police are on the case doesn't mean Goldy can't do a little snooping herself. While catering a party at the home of one of the firm's lawyers, she just happens to overhear an incriminating conversation. She also discovers a few tasty clues in the kitchen. Before long, Goldy finds herself knee-deep in suspects. But one of them is incredibly dangerous . . . and very liable to cook Goldy's goose.
