Book Review: Not Your Typical Suspense/Thriller Book

Nina Madden was in college when her father, Stephen Madden, a College Professor is accused and convicted of raping and murdering several college girls with whom he was having an affair. Nina who was not close to her father, moved away from Stone River to start a new life after his arrest and eventual conviction. She thought she had put the past behind her. She was wrong.
More than 15 yrs has passed, her father dies in prison and soon afterward her stepmother Olivia dies too. Nina goes back to Stone River to attend her stepmother's funeral and to clean out her father's house. While tying up loose ends, Nina receives two letters from her father, one addressed to Olivia and one addressed to Nina. In reading the letters, Nina is shocked to find that her father claims to be innocent of the crimes. Even more surprising to Nina is the fact that the letters implicate Olivia of these horrible crimes.
This is where the book starts to pick up. Nina who feels guilty for turning her back on her father is determined to find out the truth. In doing so, she uncovers three possible suspects who had their own motives for committing the crimes. In order to uncover the truth, Nina enlist the help of Wes Powell, the detective who worked on the case when her father was arrested. She also gets assistance from her friend, Regan, a true-crime author and Regan's FBI Agent boyfriend, Mitch. As they start to uncover the past, a killer strikes again.
I like the way the author took her time in revealing little secrets along the away. Also, her main characters seemed real and likable not your usual cartoonish characters, like the damsel in distress and the hard as nails detective assigned to the case.
The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because the ending was not as anticlimatic as I would have liked. Towards the end, the list of suspects narrow down and when the killer and Nina come face to face, I guess I expected a little more fireworks, if you know what I mean.
All in all, a good mystery book. I am going to read the other books in this series. Stay tuned.
