Book Review: A beautiful introduction to mythology

I have a first edition (1962) of D'aulaire's Book of Greek Myths and I love it beyond all belief. The cover is missing and a large section of pages are loose from the binding. I may buy a new one; but it's this copy I will always love.
This book introduced me to Greek mythology, no other book, no matter how much information is in it, will always be the one I turn to when I want to relive the excitement and glory of ancient Greece. I have read and reread the stories, and while the stories may be not be new to me, the way they are presented, and the accompanying illustrations, will always get me to start reliving the myths again in my head.
Some people seem to think that the drawings in the book are too simplistic. And compared to a picture made on a computer, they might be. But these hand crafted masterpieces are beautiful in their own right and shouldn't be compared to a .jpeg file. Even when the entire scene is in monochrome, the simple usages of color and shading, along with myrid details, are able to evoke deep feelings of every kind. There is the simple beauty of the birth of Aphrodite, blonde hair glowing in the sun as she is born from the sea; and there are complex feelings of fear, worry, and admiration as you see lonely Ariadne waiting, with string in hand, for her love to come back. And deep in the starkly lit labyrinth, Theseus is readying himself to go up against the giant Minotaur. Stories with adventure and excitement, dread fear and quick thinking, stories of love, vengeance, trickery, and sheer heroics; THOSE are the myths we want, and THIS is the book they're in.
The writing style is simple, yet descriptive, and when you add the drawings, NO child will find this book boring. Even if your child can't read yet, they will still love to look at the drawings as you tell them about the adventures of Jason and the Argonauts as they seek the Golden Fleece.
And if your child already can, or is learning how, they will read this book over and over and over. The simple writing, beautiful pictures, and intense stories are a first step towards the entire history of the Greeks, Romans, and more. BUY THIS BOOK! YOU WILL LOVE IT!
