Book Reviews of Day by Day Armageddon (A Zombie Novel)

Book Review: The perfect world for me
Summary: 5 Stars

In one whole day I read the whole book cover to cover instead of trying to catch shoplifters doing what they do best like I get paid to do. Being that I am ex-military and a total zombie fanatic I see this book as a masterpiece. J.L. Bourne is the George Romero of Zombie Fiction novels and his military way of thinking shows through the main character in every decision he makes. Hands down the best I've encountered yet and I doubt that any of the other garbage zombie books that pop up when you type in the word Zombie on any search engine are going to even come close too or equal to this book. I hope that Mr. Bourne reads his book reviews. If you are reading this review, first and foremost thank you for your service from one military man to the next, and secondly I am deeply saddened that the book did not keep going. I could have literally just kept reading it until eventually the world is overun by zombies for real LOL. To anybody reading this trying to make up their mind on whether to buy this book...DO IT NOW, BEFORE YOU BUY THE OTHER GAS STATION ZOMBIE NOVELS OUT THERE. I PROMISE YOU WON'T WANT TO EVEN READ THE OTHERS AFTER. For the people who left bad reviews because of the format in which it was written or whatever your reason...Get Real. You need to go back to whatever crap it is that you were reading because your not on J.L. Bourne's level anyway. Buy the book, it's worth the $$$ if you are a true zombie fan.

Book Review: Nice book
Summary: 5 Stars

Day by Day was the second zombie literature I've read besides the Resident Evil series. I felt the author did a wonderful job in creating an unnamed protagonist who readers can relate to. I thought the journal approach to telling the story is a wonderful idea.

Overall, the book is very good. The story has "Romero" style zombies: slow, presumably dumb, and only one kill spot. I felt the story approached the subject of zombies very well and realistically. It uses real life places, and it even uses real life people to add to the realism (ex. President Bush, etc). The book definitely will make you think twice about how you would survive in a catastrophic situation - I'm not just saying a zombie outbreak, but an disaster of any kind where it's literally you versus the world.

I think any zombie fan should get this book. I must also add that the author is very active with fans of the book. So it's very good to see the author being active with actual fans of the book. Besides Drew Karpyshyn, and SD Perry, I believe J.L. Bourne is becoming one of my favorite authors. I can't wait for the follow up to Day by Day Armageddon. The author made it very clear at the end (as well as on his website) that he's writing a follow up. Hopefully it'll come out sometime in 2008 and it can pick up in popularity.

Book Review: Good zombie fiction...but
Summary: 4 Stars

I enjoyed the book on my Kindle but started asking myself early on one simple question - if the zombies are so darned hungry why is almost everyone a zombie? Wouldn't the dead eat their prey instead of scratching them to spread the disease? While I enjoyed the mental visual the idea of a utility worker turning into a zombie while on the job and falling out of the cherry picker basket only to hang for eternity by his safety strap I was left with the question of how he became infected when earlier 'turning' happened inside of an hour. It just seemed that there was no obvious way so much of humanity could be turned undead without being eaten alive...or without more zombies missing large parts of their bodies (after being partially eaten). While this issue detracted some from my enjoyment the overall experience is good - I enjoyed the tempo of the book...it started quickly and ended with a bang. The short sighted nature of the government's response and possible ramifications are an interesting twist even if it played no real part of this book. Looking forward to seeing how the group carries on in Hotel. Despite at least one review being a little lost in 'military terminology' I did not think the 'jargon' was too thick. There is some general aviation specific language, but not too much military-specific.

Book Review: A fun read that passes quickly
Summary: 3 Stars

Zombies are always fun to read about and this book does not disappoint.

I think it bordered a bit on the "over-prepared" main character though which did take away from my enjoyment a bit. While the character will have combat skills by virtue of his background, this man seemed methodical and forward thinking to the point of annoyance in several places. It is not that the skills or actions performed by this character were unrealistic, just that such a proficient and able person doesn't make for the most interesting story.

Part of what makes zombie fiction fun is the "everyman" aspect of people from various walks of life thrown into such a tangle. As a group their skills are decent but the story comes from trying to get that group to act in unison under significant stress. In this book the main character has, for the most part, all the skills he needs himself and so the instances where he is saved by a companion when nearly taken by surprise are anti-climactic.

That being said the except from the follow-up title at the end of the book has some good looking hooks. I'll be picking it up.

Overall the book was fun, worth the price of admission but left me feeling that the story could have had better tension with a less capable protagonist.

Book Review: Best Zombie Book I have EVER read!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Quite simply the best zombie book I have ever read. I am a huge fan of the sub genre of zombie horro in general. This book gets the job done.

First, the first person perspective you get from this is great. The author writes this as told by the journal entries of the main character. It is so well done you feel like you may actually be reading a zombie holocaust survivor journal! It really gets you wrapped up in the story.

Second, the action moves quickly. Let's face it, you are reading zombie fiction to be entertained, and fast! This isn't War and Peace, nor does it try to be. The action moves quickly, but the author does a great job on character development, especially the two primary people.

Third, and this is the most exciting part for me, he really addresses the "logistics" of a zombie plague. The planning, rationing, equipment the character needs, etc. pulls you into the fantasy. I always wonder, what would you need in a real zombie outbreak? A fictional problem for which the author gives practical real world answers... makes the whole story feel more "real"

A fast read, great action, and all zombie... what more could you ask? I am "dying" for the sequel.
