Book Reviews of Dead Sleep

Book Review: Another Winner from Greg Iles
Summary: 4 Stars

While in Hong Kong, photojournalist Jordan Glass wanders into an exhibit of paintings called "The Sleeping Women," and is unable to imagine why her presence is causing such a stir among the patrons and staff of the museum. The paintings alone are unsettling, because it appears to her trained eye that the women are not merely sleeping but are, in fact, dead. And then Jordan gets the shock of her life when she sees her own mirror image staring lifelessly back at her from one of the paintings.

More than a year ago, Jordan's twin sister, Jane, was kidnapped near her home in New Orleans, one of a string of women to be abducted in the city. None of the women, Jane included, has ever been seen again and now the victims have surfaced in this series of paintings, which are selling for upwards of a million dollars apiece. But who is the artist, and what has become of the women he has abducted and used as his models?

Jordan's discovery is the first major break in the case, and the FBI suggests that they might use Jordan to bait the killer into revealing himself. Haunted by the memory of her lost sister, Jordan readily agrees and soon finds herself at the center of a complex and absorbing investigation.

This is, really, a first-rate, complex, psychological thriller that grabs you from the opening chapter and keeps you enthralled through the final sentence. The characters are well-imagined and expertly fleshed out. The plot is taut and gripping and the action is well staged. It's hard to imagine that any fan of crime fiction would not be immediately seduced by this book.

Book Review: Another great Greg Iles book
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently discovered Greg Iles and read couple of his books. I liked the fact that he does not go with single protagonist in all books. In the books I have read till now, the protagonists are all different coming from different backgrounds and from different professions. The professionalism of all characters are drawn out vividly which tells me that Greg is very smart man and is indeed master of all.

In "Dead Sleep", we are introduced to Jordan Glass, who is a burned-out war photographer (photojournalist) and a little known celebrity. On her trip to Hong Kong, she happens to visit an exhibit of nude paintings known as "The Sleeping Women" (the models look dead rather than asleep). She is stunned to find her twin sister (Jane who disappeared from her New Orleans home a year ago) posed as model in one of the nude paintings. Jordan was led to believe that her sister was murdered by a serial killer who has been snatching women from New Orleans for some time now.
Jordan decides to track down the painter and this journey takes us to New York art dealer and involves FBI task force who is working to find the killer in New Orleans. Due to Jordan's resemblance to her kidnapped sister, FBI decides to use her help in finding the killer.

As the Indian saying goes for blockbuster movies, this book has all the right ingredients i.e. Action, Drama, Suspense, Love and emotions.
This book will keep you guessing till end about the identity of killer and Greg has done justice to the climax.
Overall, this is a great book if you want few hours to fly by you.

Book Review: A Thriller
Summary: 5 Stars

Jordan Glass is a world-class photojournalist whose twin sister, Jane, disappeared without a trace over a year before from her New Orleans home and family. On a chance stop at a Hong Kong art museum, Jordan's attention is drawn to a collection of paintings called 'The Sleeping Women.' To Jordan's practiced eye, the women appear to be dead rather than merely sleeping, which is horrifying enough. And then she is shocked to her core as she looks into the face of one of the painted women and realizes she could be looking into a mirror. Convinced that the painting depicts her missing and presumed dead sister, Jordan flees Hong Kong and contacts the FBI upon her return to the States. The FBI has been investigating a long series of missing women in the New Orleans area, although no bodies have been found. Both Jordan and the FBI are convinced that the paintings prove they are looking for a serial killer. The painter's identity is unknown, and when Jordan attempts to question the New York art dealer who arranged the exhibition in Hong Kong, his apartment is bombed and he is killed. The plot, sub-plots, and imagery are stunning and the pace is, in a word, frantic. Greg Iles's tremendous talent expands with each new book, and this one is not only great read but unforgettable. The ending will shock and astonish you and leave you begging for another Iles book soonest

Book Review: Impressively woven mystery . . . with some frayed edges
Summary: 4 Stars

I am a fan of Greg Iles - it's always good to see a Mississippi boy make good. In *Dead Sleep*, he introduces a fascinating premise and follows through with a tremendously entertaining - though slightly flawed - tale. The good, the bad below:

*1* He does an excellent job of telling the story from a female point of view. Jordan Glass was believable, and her character was (to my mind) thoroughly developed. I understood her motivations, and while I might not agree with her choices, I could easily determine why she does the things she does.

*2* The whole plot-line concerning the paintings was unique and well-drawn. It is also well-paced - a rare phenomenon for thrillers these days. He keeps the reader interested from beginning to end.

-3- The romance angle between Jordan and Kaiser was a little . . . forced. Talking about kids on a first date in the middle of a serial murder investigation (while agent Wendy was looking on no less) seemed a little odd. Thrillers and romance novels should not mix.

-4- The ending was a little too convenient. The "loose ends" were slightly annoying after spending so much time with these characters.

Overall, this is a very entertaining novel. Iles seems to be getting better at his craft, mastering many different types of plot, rather than veering into formula. I am eager to see where his talent takes him (and us) next . . .

Book Review: Dead Asleep will keep you wide awake!!! 4 1/2 stars
Summary: 4 Stars

This book had me turning the pages until the very end. It starts out slow, as alot of books do, but when it picks up it's at a very fast pace. I enjoy reading novels about serial killers, and this one is pretty far fetched from reality with it's ending. But I tend to favor books and movies that you find really hard to believe.

Greg Iles writes a story of a woman named Jordan Glass. A famous photojournalist who loses her twin sister to a psychotic serial killer, who paints the "Sleeping Women" his victims as they appear to be dead or is it just that they are sleeping? Jordan will stop at nothing to find out who this mad man is and why he took her sister over a year ago, even though she realizes that in all probability her sister is dead. As studies have shown twins have a sort of psychic ability with one another, and Jordan felt the day he took her sister when her world blacked out for a moment. With no time to waste Jordan sets out on a journey filled with pain, lies, confusion, twists and turns. Noone seems to be who they appear in this nonstop thriller.

I recommend this novel to anyone who likes to read about serial killers and who loves to be scared in the process. Greg did a wonderful job at drawing me in and never leaving me bored. Dead Asleep will capture your heart and soul, along with giving a sense that in this big and cruel world anything is possible if you fight hard enough for it.
