Book Reviews of Dead SleepBook Review: Too Preachy Summary: 2 Stars
I was disappointed in this book. I enjoyed the plotline and it kept me somewhat interested, but the main character, Jordan, was kind of annoying. The author should have let the actions of the character lead us to discovering the character traits of Jordan. It seems the flow of the story slowed as we had to read speeches about what a strong, tough independent woman she was; how she had been in so many dire situations, etc. This could have been done more subtlely in my opinion, not hammered home at every instance. Some of the reviews here say Iles other books are good, so maybe I give his new release a read based on the clever plot here that kind of fell apart at the end.
Book Review: A Classic Revisited Summary: 4 Stars
It has been said that there are seven or eight great novels and that everything that is written later is merely an update of a story that has already been written. Dead Sleep is a perfect example os this. The writer is so skilled in his character development as well as using double and triple twists that this a scintillating read. The petagonist in this story is Jordan Glass, a renowned photojournalist, who view an art exhibition and notices that she is in one the paintings. The skill of the writer makes this a real page-turner and keeps the reader on edge. This is a most satisfying read for a devotee of the mystery or suspense genre and is highly recommended.
Book Review: Dead on good! Summary: 4 Stars
I definitely have my Greg Iles books ranked, with the best still being Black Cross, but Dead Sleep does not disappoint! As in all of his books, the minute you read the first sentence, you're hooked. The words jump off the page and draw you in to this masterfully scripted story. Jordan Glass is a very believable character that has handled what life has dealt her with courage and strength! She goes on to search for clues in the disappearance of her twin sister. The characters are all multidimensional and the plot is a rollercoaster ride, and I love roller coasters! It was another late night with a wonderful thriller from Greg Iles!
Book Review: A well written, if outlandish, mystery Summary: 4 Stars
Iles is, first and foremost, and excellent writer. He brings his characters to life in a way that few in this genre do (are you listening John Grisham?). THe story works so very until the last 50 pages or so. Each revelation is more outlandish than the next. There is an overly long scene where the killer explains his motivates and pieces together the whole plot. The revel scene with the killer strains belief. The final twists are welcome, but also kind of "out there." Still, it was nice to read such a well written book and be geniunely surprised (even if the surprises are crazy)!
Book Review: Perfect Page Turner Summary: 5 Stars
This book was chosen as a good bed-time read but it had me ducking out of chores to get another chapter in all weekend! The characters are developed deeply enough without having to troll through several annoying subplots, and the story winds and weaves at a fast pace yet doesn't leave you having to "take notes" to keep up.
The story is exciting, well executed and timed perfectly. The book keeps a great pace and does not fall for that rushed ending that so many do.
Well worth the weekend spent reading it!
